View Full Version : Best setup for a hatchback? (Port and sub firing directions)

I know there probably isn't a set best way to do this, but I'm just looking for opinions as far as which direction to fire the sub and port. Sub is a12" BTL, box will be about 2.5 tuned to 32.

Was considering:
Both firing forward
Sub forward, port to the side
Sub firing up, port to the side
Sub firing up, port forward

Open to all input, whether it's actual experience or just general advice :) Thanks

in my hatchback sub up port side was loud. but then again so was the sub up port back box

Firing the port to the side seems like it would be my best option because if I fire it towards the front or the top it doesn't have very much clearance before the air would hit either my seats or the hatch of the car ya know? If it fires to the side it would just be firing into the rest of the trunk area...

I'm in the same predicament. I have a hatchback and am doing a new setup soon.

in my focus hatch, i had subs forward and port forward. port ran length of box right behind head rest.

I'm kind of leaning towards sub forward and port to the side...

Both of them up? I figured it would reflect off the glass of the hatch and reflect weird...

the best way to find out is to try different styles. different cars have different designs

for hatchbacks, subs up port back or both up works best in my opinion!

Yeah I'm kinda thinking both firing up, with the port up by the seats and the sub towards the back. The box is going to be rectangular and run front to back, so it only takes up the right half of my trunk.

It's hatch dependent.

It's hatch dependent.

I know man, I said it my first post that I was just looking for opinions. Basically all I'm asking for is exactly what I've been getting; Input from people who have had setups in hatchbacks and what has worked best for them.

I am going to be honest when I had my hatch I had a single RF punch stage 2 in a truck box, and it got pretty loud in there. Hatches get loud easily.

In a truck box? Like those slim sealed boxes they make to put behind the seats?

I am going to have to sort of agree with him. I had a setup in my hatch with that type of box and at first I had it facing towards me than I turned it around and with the little flap half open it sort of acted like a port. I think it could of gotten louder with a bigger box so the sub could of breathed more "was a kicker comp". But it did get loud enough for me. IMO I do not think you need a ported box to get loud.
