View Full Version : How changing tuning frequency changes output

How does changing the port frequency effect output and sound? Keeping everything but the tuning constant, same subs, enclosure volume, power, etc, how does tuning to 30hz compare to tuning to 35hz or 40 hz? Really looking to learn how this actually changes the output. Do small differences, changing from 30hz to 32hz, make a notable difference?

best bet would be to download winisd and play with the graphs and modeling to get a grasp of it all. but generally, a low tune (for cars anyway) of around 30hz makes for a flatter response. tuning higher gives the response curve a little peakyness to it which is used as an advantage and is widely seen in this forum for spl.

a difference in tuning between 30 and 32hz, you wont notice. but you might in notice if you tune more than 5 hz difference. thing is though, for music, theres not much below 35hz anyway. so tuning low like at 30, for ported boxes, they have a steep roll off, so what ever you tune to, dont expect any output at 10- 15 hz below tuning.

It will depend on the brand/manufacturer (design) of subwoofer, and the vehicle or space that it will be used in.

Yes a difference in tuning frequency of 2hz can have a big deifference in how a driver plays, not just the frequency but the control of the woofer diaphragm also.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have winisd. I have never really experimented with tuning. I've never built more than one box per setup. I know some people like tunning to 30 hz, thats what is recommended for my e8's. Some people like tuning to 40hz, like DD recommends for the 1508. I just cant decide if I want to tune my four e8's to 30hz or a little higher like 34 or 35hz.

Four Sundown e8's in an '87 MR2, very small car, interior volume about 30-35 cubic feet.

I've heard somewhere, dont remember where or when, that it is almost pointless tuning very low in a small vehicle because of the length of the sound waves when tune so low. Dont know, I cant remember the details.

Lowering the tuning the tuning of a box while keeping all other variables constant simply will lower the peak the box has on the frequency band, allow the subs to play lower notes without unloading and making in-audible noise, and makes the response of all notes above the tuning frequency flatter.

i regret to differ, that not to lower the peak but to make the total frequency response flatter in response.
