View Full Version : Best way to remove a section of exhaust?

What is the best way to cut out a section of the exhaust without removing the entire exhaust system? I am going to cut my catalytic converter off and replace it with some regular exhaust tubing, without taking the rest of the exhaust off. I just don't know how I should cut it off.

Do you think I could use a regular welder and turn it up high and cut through it that way?

Sawzall or, if you dont want to go that route, most auto parts stores have an exhaust cutter as a loaner tool.

Like this one.

just wait for someone to steal your catalytic converter, then bam weld your straight pipe in der.

Yeah I think that looks like my best option, as I dont have much room to work with, even if I had a sawsall I dont know if I could get it as exact as I need it.

Thats when I've used them, when I dont have that much room.

Every link on the chain has a cutting wheel on it and as you are cutting through you just hook onto the link to apply more pressure. Kind of like a copper pipe cutter but with a chain. Takes under five minutes start to finish.

an exhaust shop

I don't want to pay for someone to do this for me. Besides a shop wouldn't do it anyways, since it is illegal.

run catless most likely for a louder exhaust

I already have a high performance muffler, it's just not load enough! And yeah, I could just not run a muffler, but I like the way my muffler shapes my sound. So I am bypassing the most restrictive part of my exhaust to make it louder and also for a little bit of performance gain it will provide (not much though).

if it were me, id just cut the cat out, take a pipe and bust out the platinum inside real good and then re-install it. that way is someone dose look at it, at least their still there.

Well I thought about that, but my thinking in doing it this way is this:

A lot of times around here if you do get caught (which is rare around anyways) they tell you to put it back on and it has to meet a few tests (to make sure of functionality). We do not have emissions testing here BTW. But if I get caught, I can throw on the original again and be good to go. Also, if for some reason I don't like it, I can put it back on, and not have to buy a new catalytic converter.
