if you just want a little bit of a surround sound without any connectivity that'd be what to get. honestly those HTIB units at walmart don't have many connections if any. what TV do you have? how many HDMI inputs?

alright here's what I got. I got an Onkyo 5.1 receiver I can sell you for $55 shipped. it has 2 fiber optic inputs. if you get a nice LCD, make sure it has fiber optic audio output. you would just use HDMI to connect all your sources to your TV and 1 fiber optic from the TV to the receiver. the receiver puts out 100x5 at 6 ohms, 80x5 at 8 ohms. pretty much if you get my receiver you can spend the remainder of the $500 you were looking to spend to get nice speaker setup and a good sub.

since you're on a budget I'd look at making you're own. the boogie man sub stage from parts express is really good, my brother did one for his neighbor. use the bash 350 instead of the 500 to save on money and only get the wall plug cable you can find the other stuff at home depot for cheaper. I'm sure PE will put the subs on sale again, they had them at $25 each a few months back.

for the front and surround stage, you can look at something like the later link. you don't need to get the binding post (get a cheaper one), poly fill (use old pillows), you can get speaker wire cheaper from other places cheaper and it'll be better wire.

btw I think the model is HT-R500
