port design question ?

what are advantages if i make the port long out of the enclosure ?
Look at the picture and you'll get what i mean.

the only thing that would assume, is that you don't have to make the box bigger for the displacement of the port.............but what do I know?

Also if you have a small box you don'y have to wind your port around inside like a rat maze.
