The factory door speakers in my car are 5 1/4 inch speakers, with a really small tweeter, it looks like less than an inch.
My question is, do 6 1/2 inch speakers perform or sound any better an 5 1/4? would it be worth the time cutting bigger holes in my doors to accomodate the larger speakers, or should i just stick with the 5 1/4 size?

if you dont mind cutting,do it.you'll get alittle louder and possibly alittle more bass with the bigger cone.
if you dont want to modify, then stick with the 5 1/4's.
the 6.5's willll dig a little deeper, but thats also install depedant.. the 5.25's might be smoother in the upper range, but its driver and install dependant.. those are just rules of thumb

Ok, I think i would like the extra midbass that comes with the bigger ones.

Make sure you deaden your doors/seal up the holes to improve bass response.
Sometimes you can make baffles/adapters from MDF to make the larger speaker fit and not have to cut your door.
If you're sticking with factory locations, don't always assume that the larger sizes will be best.
5.25's can have surprising midbass impact provided a properly deadened door and strong baffle, and may have better off-axis response than the larger ones in door mounting.
