What advantage does a 3-way comp have over a 2-way?

You get more detail on your highs basically by getting that extra tweeter.

There are also 4 way speakers (Kenwood KFC-6999ie)
and 5 way (Pioneer TS-A6990R). The kenwood gets 3 tweeters and the pioneer get a midrange and 3 tweeters.

Who needs 3 tweeters?

3-way comps have a midbass driver, a midrange driver, and a tweeter, while 2-way comps have a midbass driver and a tweeter. If you have the room and money for 3-ways, then go for it, but 2-ways will still suffice quite nicely.
