View Full Version : ok Dads turn for car audio......

Ok well lets just say after doing my sons car I have decided Dad needs some new toys too.. My car currently has 2 sets of factory comps in the front and rear doors.. I am going to pass on the rear comp set and go with a ****** set up front. I think I am going to run ZAPCO DCS series Reference amplifier to run them on. I have a buddy who gets 50% off these. Also you can adj them with your laptop as he uses these currently and they sound so clean. I am looking at 400-600 for the comps but was thinking of going all DD and using there DDA-W Separate Components. I have not heard them and have no access to hear them so can anyone comment or post links to some other comp sets I may like for SQ but can get loud if need be. I am also just going to go with a 10" sq sub as I do not need my ears to bleed like he does with the 13w7 hes running. I was thinking DD also for the sub does anyone have any recommendations or anything else to look at?

Peace

DD and SQ don't go together when talking about subs. Do you want to go sealed or ported? How much do you want to spend on your sub-stage and what kind of power would you like to run?

As for the fronts, it sounds like you know what you want. I've never run Zapco speakers, but I've heard nothing but good from their amps.

No I am going to run zapco amps and was looking at the DD comps they have. You can go ahead and tell me other brands its all good.. Ported my be to big so prob sealed. I am thinking 2 channel for the comps or maybe 4 channel bridged and then prob around 1000 watt for a sub. I would go 400-600 for a sub and box also maybe more.

A couple 1508s might work for your substage.

Would I be better for SQ running dual 10's or 1-10" or 2-8's? I want it to sound good and rumble also if need be for some old school Rap.......

x2 bad *** woofers.
i'de suggest getting a bass knob for the amp so if the wife or w/e is riding you can have it down , cranked w/e without having to di*k around with deck itself. and almost any sub can be used for Sq it just depends on the box, and amp, and what you concider SQ too.

PioneerSPL1990
03-02-2009, 03:37 PM
or you can try a 12" pioneer TS-W5102SPL there great all around my buddy has his on 1000W RMS and a little wider FQ tolerence (memphis amp) and it picks up most stuff great. but i'de go a little over the box specs to get the best quality+ output.

gqjeff
03-02-2009, 03:38 PM
Yea I will do the bass knob I did that for the son when he comes into the neighborhood so he can turn the bass down.

Is that the car it's going in...the Jetta in your avatar?

You've got a number of choices to choose from. I personally, have RD Sonance 12s" in a sealed box. They are great subs sealed and sound amazing. For the price, power handling and quality, it's hard to beat 'em, I think.

There are others that I "would like to try out" as far as SQ oriented subs like some Critical Mass UL 12", or a Morel Ultimo; Hertz ML 3000 would be another.

get a IDMAX 10 or 12 in a sealed box for sub substage. I'd do alil searching on the comps...depending on your budget.

Yea its going in that jetta.. I want it to sound nice and clean but it does not have to be the best SQ around... I do like to jam also...

Those are highly regarded over at DIYMA. As long as you stick with quality brands for components (Rainbow, DLS, Hybrid Audio Technologies, Image Dynamics, Focal, high end Alpine) you'll end up with a great sounding setup. If you want pure SQ, most wouldn't recommend the DD1508's, but I have heard them in a nice setup at SBN and they sounded quite good.

Im no SQ expert but as for DD subs not being SQ, I heard the DD9000 (Ie 9015, 9012) were "SQ" subs. Just a thought.

I dont know if its been mention but I have heard some Morels and they sounded pretty nice.

What's goin on Jeff? There's someone from Orland Park selling a pair of 10'' Mach 5 ixl's in a 1.6cube ported box for a really really good price. His name is "gigantic prune", I think you should send him a pm and see how much he wants for them. As for comps, rainbow, hertz, and hybrid audio are some good companies to look at.

x2, I love my freshly installed 12" Mag, should be plenty of power. I'd like to get mine metered. I was going to post IDmax or SI Magv3, then I saw someone beat me to it. Morel comps might be worth looking into, nice 3way set if your pockets are deep enough. You'll get what you pay for.

My son absolutely loves the setup.. I am already upgrading his new setup LOL.. Picked him up a set of 6.1 Kappas to replace the 4*6 and 1" tweeters so I can run them off the 300/4 instead of running the tweets off the HU. One of the 6.1's came in damaged though so another is on the way.

JL does have nice SQ but better can be had for the same price. Im surprised I havent heard Fi Q yet. 15" in a sealed box should do nicely for SQ and still some volume.

No DEF not stuck on anything.... I guess I just want something solid.. Seems I am good on the comps with the few I have looked at. I just do not want a sub that overpowers the music like my sons setup does.. I want something that blends in nicely...

i would recommend the image dynamics set because the comp speakers have great midbass even free-air unlike many sets and the SQ is great.. the idmax gets loud while sounding great.. plus the cost of this set is pretty cheap

people think i have a 10" sub in the back when they hear my mids

Image Dynamics CTX65CS

Image Dynamics IDMAX 10

cbrei1023

Yea leaning that way as my buddies car sounds great and he runs them. He has them tweeked using his PC and those DCS zapco amps. He does run active with them and his denon HU. I am going to do the install myself though so the install will be less then a steller sq install for sure. That is the only thing I am worried about dropping a ton of money and then not having it professionally installed and not sounding like it could. I DEF want to do the install though as I have found it pretty fun doing the sons car.

I use the 5 1/4" version of the Clarus in my comp set up. Nice and smooth, blend very well, and no one believes that there are little 5 1/4's in my doors lol. Very good product with some of the best customer service in the business. :)

gqjeff

Ok just had a guy I know offer me his 8w7 in a ported box with 250/1 for 350.. Should I bite on that for the sub? I have been thinking and since I am doing the install its def not going to be full SQ. SO now I am thinking decent sq/spl. Then go with the Clarus and call it good with a zapco 2 or 4 channel for the comps? How do you think it would sound overall? I currently have a p7600mp for the HU I have had a few yrs so I might upgrade that also.. If I go this route should I use the crossovers from the comp set or use the zapco for the processing of the comps?

It'll sound good but it just depends how much spl you are looking for. The w7s are great subs but 250w and a single 8'' won't be all that loud imo. You can find a pretty decent sounding setup that will get louder for $350.

cbrei1023
03-05-2009, 01:12 PM
I wouldent jump on that. Think about it for a day or two and ask yourself again if you want it. The 8" W7 will put out alot for an 8. And I mean alot. It is a 500WRMS sub though and you would only have 250 for it. If He would sell you the sub by itself I might say go for that.

yea the 500 is the danger zone. I would run the optimum though. I am looking at other options as well.. I guess I could change the tone to sq/spl sub combos but not wanting to run a ton of rms if I do not have to.. Would like to be able to run 1 batt and stock alt so around 1000-1200 total rms for both amps. I already did the big 3 to get ready. I do have a HC2000 coming and I currently have an extra HC600 also.

Ok got a sundown SAE 1000D amp and going to run a DC level 4 10" in a ported box. I made my mind up I am doing the install so I cannot do a full SQ quality install by any means who would I be trying to kid. So I am looking at the Hybrids for sure I can get them for $400 new also. Any other comp sets in that price range going to run these off a 2 channel and not mess with Active for right now.. Maybe in the future switch over to active.
