okay i am having a box built. the port will be painted BRIGHT red....i was thinking of getting the box painted black and then splatter painting the box with different colors and mayve glow in the dark paint. but the guy building the box says black carpet is a better idea because t wont scratch like a painted box. so pretty much i dont know what to do...i like the splatter paint idea but just not tooo sure.....input please!

Splatter paint would be different. Do you want to be boring like everyone else or do you want to live a little.

no way...i'm the builder in question. I don't want to put that much work into it.

They would when he shows it off, unless he gets disappointed in it and throws a sheet over it.

most people i build for like the paint. you have to do good woodworking from the start to paint though. the tighter the box goes together, the easier it is to sand and paint.

Great work there. .. and yes, have to have really good wood work or at least a belt sander to correct minor mistakes.

you would not be disappointed with the carpet....i think it looks much more professional than paint. I'll do what ever you decide, but i'd rather do carpet.

paint it with the stone creations paint from home depot, for the texture(it will cover minor blemishes), then paint it with a base color, then dip a 3" paint brush into a small bucket of your splatter color, and fling it on with the brush brissels.

it's more time consuming to paint. and you have to do a clear acrylic or something or it will scratch with ease. they do have a duller matte clear acrylic spray that works well.

dang thisis getting even better....so stone paint then black then splatter it orange, purple, green, yellow and white then spray acrylic protector on it......hhhmmm or plain black carpet...

2 coats of clear acrylic, either the matte or gloss works pretty good. the most durable finish is probably polyurethane or varnish, but it takes forever to dry. it's a pain. clear gloss lacquer seems pretty durable too, but i've had problems with the spray on stuff streaking and showing spray overlaps. it doesn't go on as smooth.

paint the inside of the port, and black carpet the rest.

that was my suggestion. I'll do a pimp job on the carpet too. But i'll do whatever he wants

either charge him more to paint and and hope it doesn't get fuxored during shipping, or send it bare and let him paint it. Just do the prep work on all the screw holes/seams for him...

Ah, the joy of decision time.

Everyone has a carpeted box. Screw that. Raw MDF or paint FTW. I leave all mine raw with the pencil marks still on it. Show off my scribbles I say.

Last box I built for myself, I had some Krylon enamel mixed to match my car. 10 coats of it, then 4 days to cure. Followed by 5 coats of PPG clear sprayed on. The paint looked 5 inches thick, still wet, and the brush marks in the blue looked so ****.

Whatever you decide, make sure your box is fully sealed from moisture, as MDF will ruin fast if you have a minor leak. I say spray inside and out with Thompson's if you decide to carpet it.

If I was the ninja I would charge a LOT more for the paint than I would the carpet.

bonesninja
02-22-2009, 01:19 PM
its not a cash deal....its a trade deal. the original deal was red, port, black paint on the outside. Either way, the cost is about the same. The carpet is a bit more labor intensive. The paint will just take longer....either way....we've reached an agreement. I'm leaving it bare on the outside and he's gonna texture and splatter paint it.

Good deal. The way he wants it painted that's probably the best idea so he can get it the way he wants.
