View Full Version : 5.25" speaker question

I just replaced all the stock speakers on my 95 lexus gs300, the stock speakers were 4" but we had to cut the baffle and upgrade it to 5.25" PIONEER TS-A1372R,

http://cgi.ebay.com/PIONEER-TS-A1372R-5-25-3-Way-200W-SPEAKERS-NEW-PAIR_W0QQitemZ120370478363QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCar_S peakers?hash=item120370478363&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

So, all 4 speakers were replaced and now the problem I have is that whenever I try to turn up the volume the highs tend to distort. It gets to a point where I have to turn the treble alllll the way down just to be able to turn up the volume.

Why is this happening? Is it the speakers? Or do I need an amplifier to power the highs?

I also have 2 pioneer tweeters added to the back door panels.

Thanks for the help guys

your factory ones are probably 8ohm and you replaced them with 4 ohm. your factory amp in the car might not be able to take that. not sure but maybe

i'd have to hear it to really know what you mean but it could be clipping, could possibly be the tweeters (either they're peaky or you're car is) also you dont need the ones in the rear btw, or it could be a install issue.. make sure the speaker is air tight with the spacer and the door, any leak at all can cause a drastic loss in midbass/ lwoer midrange.. and make the upper midrange very peaky

Thanks guys, Im not sure if cutting the baffle to make the 5.25 fit will make it sound like that. But the if i turn the volume up to high, the treble just distorts and my ears hurt. Not sure if it could be the factory amp.

doesn't the lexus have a nakamichi amp?

Mine came with the pioneer setup, so im not sure if the amp would still be nakamichi, but someone told me that I need to get an amp for the highs and thats why the highs keep distorting they way they do when I turn up the volume.

-3db on the tweets?

The tweets dont have a seperate control, they are connected with the speakers, but its to a point where i have to turn the treble down to -10db when I turn up the volume.

Since i had to cut the baffle to make the 5.25" fit, if I were to put molding clay to cover any gaps, would that make a difference?
