Lol are you sure? I'm using one right now and I have seen tests on o-scopes where they didn't clip til near 35.. If they clipped at 17 everyone's **** would be blown lol..

Worlddre

might be that the gain is to high

Phlipbak
01-23-2009, 12:05 AM
Don't blame you man.. Honestly, if you think about it logically, even if you didn't have an oscope, 17 is below even half volume, and I have heard multiple people use o-scopes and say that it clipped near 26-27

Phlipbak

That wouldn't matter if you used an o-scope, you measure the with leads at the headunit.. amps are not a factor

thormxkid

ok now when setting gains on my amp ( pdx 4.100) do i just listen to some songs and just go by ear.

or

use a sound wave of some sort and tune till it distrots then down a few ?

The internal amp will clip early, maybe 17. If your not using the internal amp, then 27 sounds about right for the preamp outputs.

i switched the interal amp to off.

What kind of speakers is this for? Subwoofers/midbass/midrange/tweeters?

Now THAT is plausible

If it's for a sub do this:

1. 50 Hz 0db tone on a CD NOT Ipod.. realmofexcursion.com
2. Disconnect speakers from amp and use a DMM by touching the + lead to the + terminal on the amp and - lead to the - terminal on the amp
3. Adjust it to the correct Voltage (Voltage is found by this formula: Square Root of [Watts x Ohm Load])
4. With the leads connected, slowly turn the gain from nothing until it reads the AC Voltage you need (1200w at 1 ohm is as follows: 1200w x 1ohm = 1200.. Square root of 1200 is 34.64 (I think)
5. After it is set, remove the test tone CD, connect speakers, play music, enjoy! :)

For mids a 1 Khz tone is what I use, and tweeters I use a 7 Khz tone, just DON'T leave speakers connected, blew a set of Seas tweeters that way.

EDIT: If you are running those full-range and not crossed over (or at least just using a HPF at like 120 Hz or so) then a 3-5 Khz tone would probably work, you want to use a tone that is in the middle of the frequency range that the speakers are playing.

And despite what others say, use a 0 db tone, some say use -3 db or -4 db because music never reaches 0 db, but that's bull. I'm in school right now for Audio Engineering Technology and music is mixed to have a standard dynamic range of -4 db to +2 db on average. ESPECIALLY modern music (they clip the **** out of modern recordings when mixing, but that's for another day :)) USE a 0 db tone.
