i am building a ported box for 2 12" jl audio w3s and i was wondering is there a difference between slot porting and circular porting? Is one better for spl than the other. Please let me know, thanks.

There is no difference, as long as you achieve the same amount of port area with both...I prefer slot ports though, I feel they are much easier to make...

I prefer slot porst as well...
you don't have to worry about resonating port material, you can make the port shorter a lot of th etime, the port itswelf provides bracing for the box, and you can make better use of your enclosure volume.

slot ports usually give people more port area. easier to make too. my opinion.

I would just be worried about some material like PVC resonating with the output... ie -- sounding ******...
