This is my first venture into HT. I have a budget of $350 for a reciever. I went through bestbuy's website and saw a few things. Anything you would recommend? Or maybe you might have somewhere else that I could look for something. I plan on buying the mids, hi's, and sub and building all the cabinets for everything. Lead me in the right direction HT gurus!!!!!!! :D

check audiogon.com. Nicer high end gear for decent prices. A lot of used, but if you do some searching you can find NIB for a good price.

stay away from hdmi pass through. don't waste money on getting a receiver with 7.1 unless it's True Dolby HD and THX certified.

you may want to check out monoprice.com right now for wire. they have 100ft spool of 12gauge speaker wire for $18 bux

Oh really? No HDMI? I thought that was the way to go? What connection would you recomend for the PS3?

you WANT hdmi, but you DON'T want hdmi pass through.

Yes, HDMI is the wave of the future. And THX is not necessary by any means. All it means is that Lucasfilm is getting a kick back for every receiver that has that logo. I would never buy ANY component based on that. That is NOT to say, however, that a receiver with that logo is no good. Just saying that it should NEVER be a selling point.

Also, make sure the receiver will decode the latest surround formats. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA. Most receivers today are 7.1 but that does NOT mean you have to run 7 speakers and a sub. 5.1 sounds great.

Onkyo TX-SR606 or H&K AVR-254

Both around 349.00 on amazon.com and both decode all the new HD audio (dolby trueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio ) Both are 7.1 or 5.1 with a seperate zone 2 available for another set of speakers in a different room. Both also upscale video to 1080i/p whatever. Both recievers also have self calibrating microphones that will help setup your surround sound once you get it.

I agree with the two listed above. I would throw the Yamaha v663 and the Denon 1909 into the mix. All 4 would be great for you. Just look to see which one fits your needs.

Why the Denon 1909 vs the 789? Both are above the price point but whats the difference?

I've been looking for a receiver in the same budget...GREAT for this thread to be on the top of the list.

I was actually thinking about the AVR 254 myself...I really love the looks of the Harmon Kardon (by no means am I basing my decision on that tho...)

If the OP doesn't mind me adding something else to the thread...I'm was wondering about a $500-$600 5 channel speaker system. I've got a 15" Adire tumult that I was thinking about using in my HT...if it doesn't make it to the car first.

LOL no problem. I do thank yo all for post with the advice. I havent forgotten about this thread. I'm just busy looking up the sites & models that you've all posted up. Thx again for the help.

P.S. I plan on using the SoundSplinter RL-i 10" for my sub. :)

I've never seen the 789 down in the $350 price range, but I know that the 1909 has been below $400 a couple times since it's been released. A few months back amazon has it in the $375 price range. That is why I brought it up because with some patience it can be found for a price real close to what he was thinking.

There is no "real" differences between the two. the 1909 is denon's "pro" line sold by higher end store's and the 789 is Denon's "consumer" line sold by stores like Circuit City. They are identical in specs and performance. The only difference between the two is the 1909 has a small second remote for zone 2 purposes.

My very first reciever was a Denon 1804 and I absolutely loved it. You wouldn't be disappointed if you could find a 1909/789 for a good price.

Thats what I figured. And its funny you mention the remote. The 789's remote has a flip-open door on the back that if you open reveals the 2nd zone controls...

Oh, and the 789 and its brethren typically have a higher resell margin, :p:

I am super happy with my Yamaha 663. It has higher output then the Denon 789 and also plays the new Blue-Ray HD formats. I got the 663 price matched at BB for $399. Great price I thought. Plus I got 6mo. no interest on my BB card.

I got a Yamaha Rx-V463, and I could'nt be happier with it. A lot of options, and pretty easy to set up. retailed for 399.99, got it for 210, I know people who know people. Alot of mistakes people mislead on I noticed, is that people buy one because x as many outputs, while x doesnt it. Read extensively, it'll pay off.

I have a Harmon kardon AVR135. It is one of the lower tier models they make, but it sounds great in my opinion. They can be had really cheap via the the HarmanAudio seller on Ebay. They are refurbs mostly, but mine was a refurb and I am using it still 2+ years never had a problem. Only knocks I have for it are the speaker terminals are a pain in the *** to use, really close together and at a wierd angle and that it is pretty big, but that doesn't really bother me much.

If I was buying right now I would look at Onkyo's THX receivers.

They actually designed them as a joint effort with THX and the reviews have all given them top marks for amp power, THX processing, and video performance.

Do most of you guys do 7.1 or still do 5.1 surround? I was looking at the Harman Kardon AVR 154, also...

go with the HK-254 or Onkyo-606, both will do everything you want. both have 5.1/7.1 or 5.1 in your HT room and 2 other speakers somewhere else around you house, patio, garage, workshop, etc.

7.1 is highly overrated in anything but the largest rooms.

I don't even think it's overrated. MOST people don't have room for or a desire for 7 speakers in their living rooms. It's basically a marketing scheme, kinda like "24bit resolution" is.One good thing though, at least they're not trying to charge a bunch extra for the extra surround channels. They're basically putting it into ALL receivers (cheap and expensive) these days.

Sorry to the OP again, but since you guys are actually involved in this thread...I've got a speaker question.

One of my dad's friends is getting rid of his Infinity setup...not exactly what I wanted, but its a pretty good deal.

(2) Infinity Primus 360...front R&L
(2) Infinity Primus 160...surrounds
(1) Infinity Entra Center Two...Center
(1) Infinity Entra Sub Two...Subwoofer...its a 12" CMMD w/ a 250w amp

I'm thinking I may be able to get them for around $550 for everything...

Pair all of this with the HK-254, and I can have a complete setup for around $1000

Sounds over priced to me. It's infinity, not nothing else. My advice would be google the a/v reciever is decent and what it runs for. I haven't seen it, so I couldn't tell you nothing exact. But it sounds way over priced.

He had it on craigslist for $675...my dad told me about it. I may be able to get a better deal, but don't want to lowball him. He got it from Crutchfield, and paid $1400 for it 2yrs ago. I'm pretty set on the receiver (I'll be purchasing that seperatly)...at I think...but not at all sure about speaker setup. I would LOVE to build some myself, but spare time is hard to come by.

He said he couldn't go lower than $500, and he'll throw in all the Monster wires that he bought when he purchased them (he said its $150 worth of wire). I told him that really didn't sweeten the deal for me. I'm going to make a decision by Sun, and let him know for sure.
