So, I want to go active with my new set of Germaniums and was wondering what head unit is the best. Any info appreciated.

eclipse is the way to go.

I usually would favor the eclipse too since I own one(cd7k though). but i would advise against the 7200

- lcd too small
- no independent eq
- lcd is not sunlight readable
- slugish response
- cant tune with remote
- connected dpad makes mistakes easier

I do love the Pioneer 800 though. Lets you do everything except the bluetooth that the eclipse has and no radio preset dedicated buttons.

i just didnt like the interface of the 87 too confusing for me.

yea. i bought mine cause I got a great deal on it and I listen to the radio quite often so i like dedicated presets.

I am satisfied with my sound, but i would like to have the independent eq though to do some more tweeking.

So the Pioneer is probably the way to go? The 800PRS definitely looks nice, but does it still have that **** picofuse issue?

no idea about the fuse. however to avoid that, dont plug your cables in hot

Never do anyway, I didn't blow my current Pioneer. I did once accidentally knock them out doing something non audio related and it scared the **** out of me as the car was on and I was worried about it blowing.

Ok, I just had another thought, would it be better to keep my current HU and get a processor like the RF 3sixty instead?

I wasn't saying teh 3sixty for sure, just using it as an example for the type of processor I would get.

The pico fuse is to protect the rest of the unit in case of a short. It's for protection, not annoyance. Too bad there are too many idiots installing their own head units that keep screwing them up.

Yea I know, but it is easy to accidentally blow, good thing I am smart enough to keep the power unhooked until all of my other connections are made.

That is tuff, I would probably say the Alpine.

Are there any other head units in this price range that may offer better SQ, remember I am after SQ here.

By independent eq do you mean left and right eq, or what are you referring to?

i've had the 9887 and the 880prs, and played with a 7200. the 800/880 is my favorite. i hear the 7000/7100 is better than the 7200 though.

You know what's sweet about alllll of those units listed????

they allll have TIME ALIGNMENT!!!

Time alignment will make the MAG v4 sound sooo much better! Even though it's already the bestest of the bestest
! OMG

Well, I never said any of that, but yes, time-alignment is on all of them, I have never used it before though so I would have to experiment with it.

As of now I think I would go with the Pioneer, I love my current Pioneer and it seems to be the one that has the least problems.

I would go with the Eclipse. I am using it. And it is not known for the pico fuse problem that the pioneer will have. Yes they all have "Time Alignment" but the Eclipse comes with a killer warranty from Eclipse. If it is bought from a dealer. 1 year theft replacement, and 3 year product warranty. The controls can be a bit clumsy at time, but you get used to it.

The Eclipse is dead **** and definitely seems to be the most focused on SQ, but the Pioneer seems to have more actual features. I wish I had the money for the Clarion DRZ9255, but that is expensive.

Pioneer decks dont' have that problem. Careless installers do. Fact is, Pioneer decks sound every bit as good as Eclipse decks do. It all comes down to personal preference.

i have the 7200.. i choose it over the 880prs because it comes with bluetooth, has copper chasis, and buit in USB also is a dead head so less chance for noise. but i also run a RF 360.2 for the extra eq tune ability

But the Eclipse's are soooooo ugly these days. Pioneer's 800 PRS has a copper chassis and has the ability to turn off the internal amp therefore making it a dead head. The 9887 has this as well. Not to mention the 9887 has far better tuning capabilities. But if you have to have bluetooth & USB I think you could have gotten that with a much cheaper unit.
