i dont understand the whole tuning part. say i have a box tuned at 35 hz, does that mean the subs will sound good only at 35hz? just curious

If you google ported enclosures you'll find exactly what is going on in a ported enclosure :)

I believe if you would graph its frequency response, there would be a peak around 35Hz.

Its not neccesary, but it will work way better when it is tuned right
