i think the concept of those boxes is: the best ideal box design is one with no sides measuring the same length... I was taught this in a sound acoustics class that I took

middle two are www.decware.com boxes, the wicked one is the 4 iso clamshelled 10's, next are a pair of imperials. the bottom can be found on www.speakerplans.com

ps, the first one looks like a mess and the wicked one probably didn't need the padding.

how big would one of these boxes be for a 12 inch type x? anyone have any ideas?

I don't get it...why not just build a regular ported box and be done with it.

I'd like to hear one of these in person, looks interesting. what would be the main purpose of something like this? a flat response from way low to 60-70hz? thats what ive heard, not sure if its true

anything like this done with a higher powered system? like 3kw, 4kw?

Speak a word, any word, out loud.

Now cup your hands in front of your mouth and repeat saying the same word.

Notice the difference?

Here's the world's largest horn subwoofer apparently

Make small drivers with low x-max and low power sound like larger drivers, at the cost of size and complexity.

i wouldn't bother with high power, the whole point of those designs is to get more out of less.

To get subs to fit, at least in the Wicked One, that can take that power is tough. There was a build on their forums using 10" XXX(old ones) and the box had to have notches to allow the magnets to fit.
Beat's right, you use lower powered subs, but I know my WO sounded REAL NICE. 4th order FTW.

Stumbled on this CL add, looks like there are some folded horn plans available for sale
at the site this guy references. He built one and is trying to sell it way high imo.

Apparently you can couple the folded horn cabs into arrays that increase the output.
cool.

what i have read from is that a ported box is designed to give you a couple more db's but also a well tuned box will perform at a slight lower freq. but reduce sound quality.

the info i have gathered off the folded horn is that it is the best design for a speaker, making it conciderably louder but also with no sacrafice to sound quality.

i have been pulling my hair over the designs of sealed ported tline and folded horn... i want the best sound quality and a tline is way to big to fit into my car, but i have a type x in a sealed box and i want to test a different closure in my other car.
but this folded horn idea has got me going crazy. i want to design and build one for my type x and see what it does. i also have 2 10w6's to play with... but i was interested to know if there is anyone out here that knows what type of spec these boxes need to be built for.

plan on running the type x, or w6's on 1000 rms.

i'm really interested in running that in my car with the 2 w6's

Thats seems like ti would sound really nice. I haven't heard anyone dissapointed in a folded hord that was properly build and desinged. But it has to be perfect or else it sounds like crap

sure, 10 bucks... no prob. lol i am looking mostly just to find out the exterior dementions for it. i assume that the box will be way to big to fit into my trunk, let alone leave any room for my seats to store, or the 2 amps.

Yes I have seen some very nice designs come from Pete.

vforvengence

I have too, and for 50-100 bucks a design they better be good. There are plenty of other guys aou tthere that do just as well a job for $10-20 for sure.

I have never obtained a design from Pete due to the # of failures I have heard of from him. Not worth it IMO

I am not trying to argue. I just know of some people that were not pleased at all.

The Wicked One plan is free. It works from 36x24 through 36x36. I made one for my RE SE 12's and just scaled the box up taller. I loved it and will make another someday.

frugel-horn.com is an excellent source for full-range horn designs, as well...

And yes, throwing a high-excursion, high-powered driver in something like this sort of misses the point :) I have two 6.5's with 2mm of Xmax in a 6' tall horn, and with less than 10 watts they'll extend down into the subbass range...can't do that with a ported enclosure.

Heck after reading this site I may just make a set in Jan for my home system just to see how it comes out. :D
