I'd like to build a passive crossover for my wife's new components, and I found a few good crossover calculators. Could someone explain the difference between Linkwitz-Riley and Butterworth and 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. orders? Thanks

Allright let me see if I can remember correctly. :D Linkwitz-Riley crossovers match attenuation slopes so that system response is flat at crossover point. Butterworth crossovers yield to a peak at the crossover frequency. Bessel crossovers have a frequency response between Linkwitz-Riley and Butterworth crossovers.
1st order - means the crossover has a 6db roll off and a 90 degree phase shift.
2nd order - 12db roll off and a 180 degree phase shift
3rd order - 18db roll off and a 270 degree phase shift.
4th order - 24db roll off and a 360 degree phase shift.
I believe I remembered correctly. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. :)
