I see passive x-overs for sale in the classifieds..
Do you guys just buy passive crossovers and buy some mids and tweeters, and build a component set?

you can, it probably wouldn't matter much, i have a set of kicker midbass and tweets running off of hi fonics crossovers and it sounds pretty good.

if you are wanting to throw something toghter it will sound ok
