awesome. how are you gonna get the amp wired up? will it fit back in with the rcas plugged in and everything? or are the inputs tucked in?

nope, that was the tough part. it goes in through the bottom, in a tricky way.. as you can see on the bottom side, the holes (where the fiberglass is) is where the wires will be fed. the power side will have holes drilled above the terminals to get a screwdriver in to tighten, where the rcas i can just plug in from underneath.. tricky, but it will work. ill show how in the end. thanks man.

looks pretty sweet and a good idea for sure. Your customer or whatever is probably gonna love it.

Wouldn't really go with the amp but I bet a gloss black with a high shine would look sweet. Also maybe continuing the blue middle stripe down the rad would look cool to with either the matching silver or a black.

Only thing I can think I would rather see done on it would be wrapping the cloth all the way around and stapling it to the back side of the MDF instead of the edges. Also making the amp itself bolt to a back piece and the molded portion slide in over and either clip down or be fastened somehow to allow for easy removal and tuning of the amp if necessary.

Gonna look sweet when totally finished. Looking forward to seeing it, definitely a cool design, specially for amps that have a fairly distinctive/cool shape to them.

first.. this is my vehicle.. which is why i dont get too much time to work on it..

i thought about continuing the blue stripe, but i cant picture a way of doing it without it looking corny. the black sounds nice, but i think im going to go with the silver of the amp, just for a better match

theres a reason i stapled to the sides, it has to do with the base it sits on... youll see what i mean in the updates..

and thank you, its been a fun project, not the usual box or amp rack..

Ok, so is FG'ing THAT hard? I really want to be custom with it, but I just don't have the confidence to do it :(.

wasted ink
10-19-2008, 10:53 PM
just get some supplies and try a small project after doing some research. as you try, youll fail, then learn. research your mistakes, after some reading and practice youll get better...

thanks man, after seeing this awesome build, it may be the catalyst and motivation i needed :). that looks SO clean. :( i want it :)
So compared to a MDF box, price wise, will fiberglass cost around the same (minus man hours) as far as supplies will i still stay in the 30ish dollar rang for a box?

Loud3
10-19-2008, 10:59 PM
Supplies will put you over that range.

wasted ink
10-19-2008, 11:13 PM
Supplies will put you over that range.

hes right, especially if you use the good stuff, which i recommend. for practice, the bondo **** is ok, but as soon as you get the hang out dabbing mat and ****, switch right out. youd be amazed at how much easier things go with good supplies.

id say get the right from the start, but theres two perks to starting with bondo ****..

1. its cheap.
2. for the first few projects, chances are you will trash them, and in the process of building them, youll waste alot of materials. everyone thats new at it usually does. you wont have as much of a hard time parting with them if you didnt spend too much on supplies.

a small update on this. im sick of it sitting around, i dont have the time to prep it for paint, so i decided to wrap it. this amp is in the process of being sold, so i just want this finished up.

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb107/s13driftfiend/018-1.jpg

tan suede i had laying around, close enough to the interior of my truck...

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb107/s13driftfiend/020-1.jpg

other side should be done tomorrow or the night following.

wasted ink
11-09-2008, 03:03 PM
so i ended up wrapping this, im not sure if i like it or not though. the sides are not perfect because they wont be seen. just the ends. ill try to get it installed tomorrow or this week so to decide if ill keep it that way or not. keep in mind this is my old setup, so this wont be in the truck for too long...

Not bad my man, not bad at all. Next time before you stretch the fleece. Cut a rabbit in the lower panel where you stapled your fleece. Then staple the fleece in the rabbit. Makes finishing an arse ton easier :)

thanks guys.. i know about the rabbeting trick, thats what i typically do, but my router **** the bed the week or too that i started doing this... i was going to warp the material underneath, and i forgot i would be able to mount it if i did that, but it was too late... like i said, this wont be in the truck for too long, so its no big deal.

I se a table saw in one of your first pics. Set the fence 1/4" away from the blade. Set the blade height to match the depth you want your rabbit. THen get to cutting :)
