View Full Version : Amp Recommendation for a jeep with CD Head Unit AND seperate HDD MP3 Player

*Noob Alert*

I've got an '02 Jeep Wrangler. I'm trying to improve the stock sound system and need recommendations for an amp and speakers. I'm no car audio genius, and I'm not trying to build a monster system with 1.21 gigawatts of bass to compete in a sound off. I just want something that sounds decent and is loud enough to be heard at highway speed with the top off.

Here's what I've got so far:

Components in hand:

- An Aiwa CD/MP3 player head unit. It has 4 RCA outputs on the back, I assume for Front L/R and Rear L/R. It also has a mini-plug sized aux input on the front.

- A Dension DMP3 (http://www.densionusa.com/DMP3A1.htm) hard-drive based mp3 player. It has two RCA outputs on the back of the car host frame, left and right.

- Brackets to mount 5.25" speakers in the front dash instead of the 4x6 stock speakers

- An overhead "sound bar" that holds two speakers. I believe the stock speakers in there right now are 5.25s, but I've heard that 6x9's will fit there without a problem.

What I need to buy:

- Amplifier

- 5.25 speakers for the front (I'm thinking Infinity Kappas)

- 6x9 speakers for the sound bar

- Install kit/brackets for the dash (www.installer.com (http://www.installer.com) has a couple. any other places?)

- Wiring kit for the Amp and speakers

Goals -

Ideally I'd like an amp small enough to either go behind the dashboard or underneath the driver's seat. I understand there are heat issues with amps, so I've been looking at amps with built in fans. And if I understand things correctly, I need a 4 channel amp to preserve the ability to control balance front to rear (fader) as well as left to right. I don't have any plans for a subwoofer in the near future. So far, the Audiobahn A4004T (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-TiO8b9uBLhu/ProdView.asp?s=0&cc=01&c=3&g=120&I=037A4004T+) looks like a contender for underseat mounting. It has a fan and it is fairly small, about 9" x 10", although I'd prefer that it was black instead of having a mirror finish so it wouldn't stand out under the seat.

Are there smaller multichannel amps out there? I'd really like to mount the amp up under the dash, but the amp would have to be smaller than the 9x10" audiobahn.

Also, is there any way I can hook up the Dension MP3 player as a source to the amp in addition to the Aiwa Head Unit? I know I can hook up the Dension through the Aiwa via the Aux input on the Aiwa, but I'd like to leave that Aux free in case I want to play handheld mp3 players through it, as well as giving the dash a cleaner appearance.

Also, I'd look to put both the Aiwa head unit and the Dension mp3 player one on top of the other in the double DIN opening in the jeep dash.
