By this time next week, I'll be the proud new parent of an RE XXX 12".

It's going in the trunk of a Mazda 626, to be ran off of an Orion 2500D.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a box size/tuning frequency? I'm looking for it to be a loud daily driver, cargo space be ****ed. If you have ran an XXX or heard one and have a suggestion or comment on your experience, I would really like to hear it.

Tune it low. Like 32Hz.

I was thinking somewhere from 32-35 max. How big should it be?

Hmmmm... How much room do you have? Give me the dimensions.

2.5 cubes at 32hz. Reference standard enclosure.

I just designed one at 2.8 cubes at 34Hz.

I loved 2 @ 28. Tried higher and it didn't sound nearly as good.

Of course that was with an old style XXX. You getting a new one or a used one?

bad_trip

It's a used one. I'm not sure of which year's model it is though.

I'll get the dimensions in a few and let you guys know how much room i have to play with. If i go around 2cf though, i will still have plenty of room.

The year isn't that important. There have only been 2 versions, the new version that is like 9+ inches deep with the massive basket and domed motor and the '05 and older version with the XBL^2 motor and chrome top and back plates with the conventional 12 spoke basket.

IIRC the **** cones had different motive parameters (Cms, Mms).

Are there any of those still in circulation anymore? Those are approaching 7 years old now.

bad_trip

I don't even know. This one isn't a **** cone though. It's one of the newer ones. Personally, I like them better than the **** cones.

Newer than the **** cone or the newest style?

This kind. lol. So would 2.8 cubes @ 32 hz be good?

helotaxi

That would be the new one. No idea what that thing wants. Probably close to the same but can't say for sure.

The site still says 2.2 or something. I've been playing around with their design thing, and I'm going to see how i do with that.

I'm going to pick it up in a few minutes. I'll still need to build/buy a box. I'm a little skeptical of building my own, because i haven't done that yet, but i figure I could learn. I just want it to sound good though so I might see what i can get one built for.

That looks nice! Is that plexi? In the picture it kind of looks like it's just a big opening. That's about the same dimensions I'm trying to work with. You should inform me of how that sounds. :D

Bump for all you vampires. I got the sub now, so I'm probably going to start building the box soon. I'm kinda leaning towards 2.4-2.8 @ 28-30. Hoping that will work well.

Night night! Hopefully i'll see some replies in the morning.

well i got the sub today.

For anyone planning on getting one, or about to install one, it may be a two man job. lol. this sub is heavy as hell. The box it is in is too big for it, something like 4.5 cubes, and i'm not sure of the tuning. It's basically sitting on my back seats right now.

So far, I'm happy with it. It's taking 2500 watts like a champ, and sounds very very clean. Not nearly as loud as the SX's, which upsets me, but sounds infinitely better.

Now i can't wait to get it in a proper box. My plans for the future include another one of these suckers and a 4K-6K watt amp that's stable @ .5 ohm. :D That should satisfy my addiction.

oh also, i meant to say that it hits the lows a lot better. it doesn't seem to pick up as low of notes, but the lower ones that the SX's didn't really move much on really make this thing rumble. It gets me all excited for putting this thing in another box.

I don't know what you did wrong with that XXX, but there is an issue somewhere.

It is in a pretty crappy box, and area of the car, so that will make a bit of a difference when i get it in a new box. also there's only one of these. I had two of the SX's in a really good box. that's why i'm guessing they were louder. the xxx still sounded way cleaner.

in what kind of car, with how much power?

I'm leaning towards something a little bigger than RE specs, and tuned around 32. hopefully i'll be satisfied.
