Aren't all HU 50 Watts x 4 Max. (20W x 4 RMS)?
Even the factory installed ones... ?

Most after market yes. Factory no. Depends. Some have amps else were in the car. Some do not.

Almost all aftermarket HU's have 22wrms output. Alpine has a HU that puts out a bit more and needs a dedicated power wire from the battery.

And they all **** compared to a real amp. That's the most important thing to know.

I used to have a HU where the power amp section was detachable
from the unit so the HU could be used with no amplification. I think
it was a kenwood. I remember liking it.

A lot of new models that are coming out allow you to run it as a "dead head", meaning you can turn off the internal amp. I turned it off with my 880.

Crappy head units may only be 10w x 4. Decent units are over 20w.
there are realistic ratings and then advertised ratings.
Differences in design and components used will yield different ratings.
