View Full Version : 18" BTL interchangeable port enclosure :D
Pioneer~Saturn

Been thinking of this idea for quite some time and today finally finished it.
For daily setup for the 18" BTL:
-31Hz
-(4) 4" ports
-4.7 cubes
This will allow me to make any port setup I want and experiment pretty much without limitations and without yanking my box every time, just the port-wall...just whip up another port setup and slide it in and secure it in and see how it does :D.
Anyways, here are them pic-a-tures...
An all too common site..

make sure to make some kind of rubber stripping or gasket between the port board and box
Pioneer~Saturn

I'll try but it most likely wont be a vid of it in a car though :( because mines still in pieces...
Might put it in my friends backseat of his saturn and hook it upto his Sundown 1500 though...but the 18 will laugh at that power...it wants more! :)

4.7 cubes and 10.7 square inches per cube for port. All on a 5kw+ amp. Seems like a bad idea.

fantastic job on the box. BUT please do not use pvc, buy aero ports. You will be VERY surprised on the gain in output. Then you never need to change anything either. Just stuff a rag in a port etc....

thats a very small box for a 18''.. does this btl have the neo mag?
Pioneer~Saturn
07-23-2008, 10:11 AM
Thanks guys. As for size...that box is almost the largest I could make it, period...I might have been able to get away with another .5" taller and another 1" longer but thats about it.
As for the PVC/Aero ports....Yea aero ports would have been preferred...but I can always snag some in the near future and see the difference..
And I may be adding a few lengths of all-thread bar for supports in the near future as well.
And this is the older-style BTL...triple magnet...kind of want to try out a new one (Or 2 of them next summer *shhh...keep your eyes out for that ;) )

Old box was almost identical in volume and port area+tuning...did just fine

I coated the inside of the enclosure and the back of the port-wall last night with fiberglass resin and will do another coat today...along with adding some vertical supports and will be pooling resin in the corners to add strength and smooth-out the corners so they arent just 90 degrees
Will have pics later

I didn't say the box wouldn't make noise. Just going to sound like garbage. You would be better off putting a 15 in a proper box than putting an 18 in a cramped one.

It sounded great, much better than I thought it would...and 4.7 cubes for an 18 isnt really pushing the limits or anything....tons of people put them in 5 cubic feet even when they have the room to go larger...I would like it to be 5 cubes net, but that pretty much cant happen here. And already tested it out even with shotty sealing of the port wall it sounds good (only a couple screws were in and just plugging all the other holes)....nice n low is the way to go
And thanks guys...I'll have some pics up after I finish resin'ing the inside and a couple other improvements

try using 2 large aeros when you can afford it, you will save some space= more volume and you will gain in output.

Yea, im definitely going to go with (2) 6" aero ports for the next one im making..

If you truly think that, then you have never heard an 18" BTL in a good box. It won't even compare.

when using aero's, how did you determine the # of aeros and the length of each to figure tuning frequency?
i've always wondered about this and never got an answer

There's an equation and also tons of software choices out there to assist with calculations
