Alright. So the time has come for me to run active. Hopefully I don't end up needing new tweeters tomorrow.
Before I get started on this project anybody have some advice for me? I've been searching and searching for about a week already. Dediced to make a thread to ask a question or two.

First off, what should I use at an x-over point just to start with for my tweeters and roughly how much power.

And Hertz says the LP on the mid is 50hz or so. What should I set mine at? or Will it all be dependent on what I want/like?

Thanx in advance for any input. Wish me luck. If I don't post for a month or so, things more than likley went VERY badly.

Didn't happen yesterday. Too much drinking/working on other things + bad weather. Today is looking much better.

yea im about to run active with my MLK2's when they come in, let me know what you end up going with

we know a few guys at hertz we'll probably give a call when we try and do it, i dont want to mess up a set of 600$ tweeters

why would you worry if your an authorized dealer? just get them warrantied if u blow them.

we shouldnt have a problem with them though, im not a dangerous person on my equipment

what amp are you using? im running the zapco dc ref1000.4 on my mlk165. well not yet, waitin for amps to arrive, i was thinkin bout the mlk2 but i drive a honda and im still in school, no need to spend a **** load on a system. ill be happy wit the mlk165's. i just wanna see how they react to like 400 watts like how lyttleviet had on his.

Hell I guess if I blow em up, that means it's time to upgrade.

well im going to run all RF amps, so there will be a t600-4 on the front, should do ~150@4ohms per channel , rear gets a t400-2, bass gets a t40001

i coulda got audison amps, but i didnt want just 1 audison amp, and they are costly:crap:

make sure you have a 9v batt or drill batt to pop the speakers so you know exactly which ones you are hooking up where, dont want to get the wires backwards

quit giving excuses and go out there and do it;)

audison amps are roughly the price of the RF amps. and u forgot to mention to make sure the drill batt is 12v, had a guy test his door speakers on his drill battery and the ******* forgot that it was a 14v battery.

ill pop them with my 14v batt, no problem, ive never straight popped a tweeter though, dont know how that would fare

3khz +/- 1/3 octave or so.

Should be the HP on the midbass/range, not LP. The LP is up near where the tweeters are HP'ed. 50hz seems low, but you need to consider slope as well. What x-over points are available on the processor??

I've never blown a midrange from crossing it too low. Listen attentively and you will hear when bad things start to happen.

Huh? I pop mine with a 14v battery all the time and never had a problem.

Edit, ment to quote datboiroy.

hahahahah suckers!!!! I'm running active now. And I love it!!!!!! Still need some tuning on my time alignment. and... Hertz ratings at power handling are kinda off.... well really off.

Anybody wanna help me w/ a slope.. To be more specific, what is it? and what's it do? I got it set now to were I think it sounds good. btw cold play - see you soon... That is the best sounding song in my car so far.

Atm I have the hp on the mids at 2.5k and the lp at 160 I believe. The tweets are at hp 2.5k

bamaboy
05-20-2008, 11:04 PM
160 is really high for a LP, i set my pro's at 110hz @ -24db, but thats because im running a good bit more power to them

usually mids are LP at around 80hz, depending on your system, maybe 60hz if your not running too much power

with the tweeters, i would think the HSK's might be crossed a tad bit higher, but i dont have much experience wiht them, if they sound good at 2.5k then let them be

do you have an option like 12db or 24db for the slope? or is it fixed?

what about hertz's power rating?

wat bout the power ratings can they handle more than rated or much less

bamaboy
05-21-2008, 08:32 AM
i might imagine less, since there is no passive there to waste energy

wat bout the power ratings can they handle more than rated or much less

Both amplifier and speaker ratings are nearly completely worthless in the real world because they assume lots of different factors that vary due to install. :(

when i had my hsk installed, i ran them like this

mid lp - 80hz@12db
mid hp - 3.2khz@12db
tweets - 3.2khz@24db

Racerx250
05-22-2008, 01:40 AM
how much power did you send to them?

aeon
05-22-2008, 01:43 AM
i forgot what amp i'm running right now but it puts out 125w x 4. i set the gains by ear and have the mids turned about 1/3 of the way up and the tweets turned 1/4.

i would say about 125w to the mids and a lot less than 125w for the tweets. when you measure the tweeter output from the amp, the volt reading is a lot lower than the mids when the gains are set at the same level.

Racerx250
07-17-2008, 02:31 AM
Well i've been tweaking them more and more everyday and they seem to sound better and better everyday. Today I got to tweaking the gain on the mid and now i'm much more pleased. Just an :fyi: to those interested/bored.

how do u run active? lol....i have my hsk running off a sundown 100.4 but im usting the hertz crossovers. does that mean im passive?

Racerx250
07-18-2008, 05:52 AM
Yes you are running passive if your using the x-overs. You have to use your x-overs in your HU. I'm not really the best person to explain the whole active thing.
But as of now you are passove.

Racerx250

An update for those interested.

Hertz hsk tweeters can be crossed as low as 1.6k and still hold up very well. very very well.

And the mids can take a bit more power than I though they could. Ever since i've had them they just haven't sounded as good as everyone turned them out to be.
But now that I have started to toy with it again. The more i'm likin it. Thinkn hard to trade my 955mc in for an 800prs or 9887. And get me an equalizer. If anybody has any input I would like to hear it.

YOu are all using teh terms high pass and low pass backwards. His mid is low passed at 1.6K or whatever, meaning everything lower than that will be passed, and they are high passed at 160Hz, meaning everything higher will pass.

bamaboy
11-19-2008, 05:53 PM
so you have the xover at 1.6khz for the tweeters?

i just wouldnt see those playing that low efficiently, my ml280s are crossed at 2250hz

but ive never used them without the passive so i could be wrong :fyi:

im looking at a set here and from factory they are crossed at 3300hz 12db

i'd recommend to run bandpass crossover if ur amp has that function but most dont . The one i've seen is audison 5.1k has that fuction.

The tweeter should be cross at somewhere 2.9k or something i don't remember, just check the hertz website or ur manual they'll tell you what frequency it is crossed at.

yea i forgot ur HU can do the crossover stuff :D get clarion DRZ9255 :D

for the price of that unit, it better.

Remember, just because they can be crossed that low, doesn't mean they should.

The eclipse cd 7200mkii is $379. For all those features and sq you can't beat it.
