Title says it all right?
I've pre-ordered the subwoofers, I will get them near the end of may/ early june.

This is the stratus:

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/Totalnewbie007/DSC02034.jpg

I will be tearing out the old baffle, and the front.

Making some kind of base, battery rack, and amp rack in the trunk.
Clamshell will go behind the seats, then I will seal the trunk off, stuff it with polyfill.

I bought E8's (sundown)

The final specs will look like this:

Re = 3.37 ohms (4 ohm nominal)
Fs = 34.9 hz
Qes = 0.5323
Qms = 6.93
Qts = 0.4943
Vas = 7.6 L
BL = 13.3 N/A
Mms = 127.7 grams
Cms = 162 um/N
Xmax = 12mm one-way linear (70% BL method)
Rated RMS Power = 200 watts
Depth = 4.25"
OD w/ gasket = 8 5/16"
Cut Out = 7"

Sealed Box:
0.280 ft^3 w/ F3 of 50 Hz (Qtc = 0.707)

Ported Box:
0.60 ft^3 tuned to 30 Hz
F3 of 25 Hz

They should be black instead of chrome.
This will be fun! :veryhapp:

these will be powered by 1 or two sundown 3000d's

Im not catching the jist of this, looks like a regular sealed clamshell to me

Rawr-DQ
05-02-2008, 02:50 PM
there is no back side, the clam will be sealed in the opening behind my seats. I gotta cut the metal out to make it fit.

odd design, have fun fitting it all in there

Rawr-DQ

The Clamshell will act as a bandpass from what I was told.

smd4life
05-02-2008, 02:55 PM
ok, i gotcha, what makes it bandpass though? Thats just IB

it's 2 chambers firing into another camber...the open area on the "face" of the box is considered a chamber...therefor it's a bandpss

cutting glass smells like pine.

MikeyB
05-02-2008, 04:38 PM
How did that last setup perform? I saw your old build thread to the point of the top baffle but that was it. BTW all that fiberglassing isnt done right to the chassis of the car is it? I hope that got masked off......and are you ripping all of that old glass out?

jw

Rawr-DQ
05-02-2008, 04:41 PM
It did get masked off, but I'm leaving the glass in.

It played really really really really low. It peaked at like 25 hertz.

the problem was the sub decided to go.

MikeyB
05-02-2008, 06:37 PM
How the hell are you going to take the top baffle and the rest of that **** out?

Rawr-DQ
05-02-2008, 06:39 PM
sawzall and a long blade pretty much.
I'm glad I bought this thing.

Once I get part of it out, I can get inside at a different angle.
With the batteries out I can literally get inside the box.

I just dont understand why you dont rip out all of that glass thats in there, seems like it would be easier than cutting all that out and trying to save it. I would just hack it up into some big chunks and rip the **** out and start over imo....but thats just how I would do it.

....proceed w/ PIX

Rawr-DQ
05-02-2008, 06:57 PM
I'd have to cut it out like that anyway to remove all the glass.
I'll try to get some more done before I run out of daylight.

Rawr-DQ
05-02-2008, 07:44 PM
Alright, got a lot more out, once I get everything I need out I can start cutting the metal that is in the way.

Then on to sealing the trunk off from the cabin, in prep for the box/baffle.

I like how it used to look better lol it seems like you would have more space though to have them running closer to truly IB if you pulled all the glass out.

I gotta tell ya mike I tried that.

I did.

It does not work, I'd need a sledge hammer. The Fiberglass is unbelievably resilient

It was taking forever to get it fixed, eventually they will reopen I guess, and then I might of been able to get it fixed, but I got tired of the hassle.

Also, these 8's have 3.16 times the surface area of 1 18" :)

a mini-meet sounds good though...where could we have it? Without getting harassed by the police.Wherever, a shopping center parking lot....I find it easy to talk to police, just tell them we are audio enthusiasts and instead of pissing people off we like to stay away from residences, etc. Plus, it's not a car club meeting and a lot of people probably drive normal looking stock vehicles, which would draw less attention even if we are all younger.

edit: I will also keep my eyes peeled over the next couple weeks for other possibilities.

Rawr-DQ
05-06-2008, 07:28 PM
I'm curious myself, just the value, or the fact the speakers are going to destroy it?

I think I'll get that piece and weld it back in if I ever try to sell it.

...edit: Yeah I'll re-enforce it, I've already got some there. I've already talked to a gentlemen that has done this to a stratus to see what he recommends. He told me that the shock towers flexed some. So I'll be putting some kind of steel square to keep it from doing so.

rockmo
05-06-2008, 07:31 PM
ummm, you will need to rebrace that with steel across the top of the box or your rear struts will be trying to push that all in toward each other! that is the reason that big *** piece of metal is there! good luck , hope it gets loud though. that is alot of 8's. will be interesting.

your rear doors wont shut properly in the long run without some type of support in the rear window.....i would run some all thread through the box and weld the ends conecting the metal peaces on the side

Just weld in some round tube top and maybe bottom for a crossmember and it should be good. You definately have more balls with a sawzall and a car than I do man.

1" square steel welded at the shock towers, and thick steel stock on the top, bolted in multiple locations to prevent it from flexing/re-enforce the top.

Some of these cuts were some of the hardest I've had to measure and figure out.

Mainly because of how I drew it up. Took two tries to get a decent, the 3rd and 4th piece came out pretty good.

I don't have a table saw, just a skill and a sawzall.

I'd just end up cutting it if I had to remove it, not a big deal, my sawzall eats threw it real nice.

Although welding in there just got 1000x harder, because I used an acetylene torch! (turbo w/o oxy...yes it gets hot enough) But the flame is rather large, and the heat it puts out is pretty **** significant.

Anyone interested in T-nut kits?

I've ordered 200 screws and 200 t-nuts because I need 128 of each.

So that leaves me with 9 sets (72), 8 screws/t-nuts each.

How is an IB even possible?

A bandpass is a sealed chamber and a ported chamber. A IB is just subs mounted in a baffle, with no enclosure. Just to seperate the front and rear waves.

If the sealed chamber is open into the trunkspace and not enclosed, then its just a ported box with the port firing into the cabin and the subs firing into the trunk.... And not a bandpass.

If the sealed chamber is enclosed and the better part of the whole trunk, then its just a bandpass with a smaller ported chamber and a HUGE sealed chamber.... And not IB.

It could be a ported chamber in the front, and a ported chamber in the rear... Then thats a dual bandpass, where each chamber is ported seperately, but not ported into each other. Its like an 8th order, but there isnt a port connecting the 2 seperate chambers. But seeing that this isnt the case, this isnt even really an option.

And since theres really no way for it to be a bandpass AND IB at the same time, I dont really see how you can combine the two. Thats like saying you have a sealed ported box. Its just the basic design of one makes the other impossible.

The screws are 1.5"s long, and the threads of the nut go in 5/16" of an inch..

So if the speaker's rim is less than 5/16ths" thick, it will make it to the nut, if the mounting ring of the basket is 1/8" thick (my tc lms 5400 is) it will have 3/16ths" of thread if you put the t-nuts halfway in the baffle (did this once) then they would definitely work.

Tweeters I think I will put them in my A-pillars, the door is kinda close but should be okay, thanks for noticing though!

You're absolutely right, I never thought about it, was just making a title that I can't change anymore lol.

...hmmm well with a ported box, the sub and the port combine making it a ported box.
this setup separates the wave from the ported side, thus acting as a 4th order w/ a giant sealed chamber on the other side which acts like an IB...?

lol I dunno.

i like the staples MUCH better than the glue :)

turned out so much better.

and the technically name for 'an ib' in a vehicle is actually called a TB - or a trunk baffle. this is because a true IB setup is when the VAS of the speaker(s) are increased 10 fold, and that is the 'size' of the sealed enclosure.

well, its much easier to just put the rear wave into oblivion and trap the front wave in a room, so its the same in a car. i doubt people want to cut huge holes in the trunk to make the install REALLY IB. so they just make the sealed side as large as possible.

and it works great. so who cares :)

im sure it will jiggle your nuts and sound great. doors are comming along better than i thought but im very scared about the joint between where you taped off the inner area and where the glass meets it.

you should have decoupled the center part there from the rest of the panel. there are little plastic melt rivets on the back, and you could easily have popped those off (a nice big drill bit does the job well by drilling out the plastic melt part) and they come apart. then when you are done glassing, you get some plastic and set it on fire (after scraping up the area nice and well) and then you melt the rivet area - and then stick the two melting plastic pieces together and trim with a dremel and it welds the ABS together like the original rivet, but a little uglier :)

so good luck with that part :crap:

I just got them today, been busy working and finally got some time to work on the car. I worked up until it got dark ans started raining.

I got the cutouts done only to find my jig was a little off and they came out too small, I'm going to run my round over on them and see if I can squeeze them in.

No pics on the work I got done because of this rain, but I took pics of the subs.

The biggest down-side to using these as a dedicated mid-bass is the low 1w/1m sensitivity. In order to get the most low-end output as a subwoofer driver it ended up with a low sensitivity - just a law of speaker design, can't have small box, lots of low-end, and high sensitivity all at once :)
