View Full Version : RyanM923's 21" Autotek Build...

So I'm planning on starting a box for my 21" Autotek sub that I've been trying to sell for the last few months....I figure since no one wants it, I'll just use it. :D Maybe if I put up some good numbers with it someone will want to buy it. :greedy:

The box is going to be 10ft^3 tuned to 53hz, with about 250in^2 of port. It'll be powered by a Sundown SAZ-1500D at .5ohms in my '04 Dodge 1500 4-door truck...here's a little glimpse as to what it's going to look like.

This will all be below my window line, also. :sneaky:

why 53hz

RAM_Designs

why 53hz

Truck peaks at 55hz, this box should have a nice 8db peak at 55-56hz...this is going to be strictly for comps, if I hadn't meantioned that already.

There's no bassrace stuff around here that comes around more than a handful of times a year. If there were I'd stick to my MJ's for comps.

i'm pretty sure people don't want to buy it is because they can't fit it :fyi:
Actually, for a flat response curve winISD plots it at 2.6ft^tuned to 36hz, hence why it's called the "Stealth" line. I'm just going this big an tuning high for a big peak in the response curve.

Well I decided to change my box a little and use some leftover MDF from my other boxes. The box will now be 8.5ft^3 tuned to 52hz, and just 49" long. Got started on it tonight...

First pic came a little late in the build...
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/RyanM923/Autotek%20Build/AutotekBuild006.jpg

A little size reference, the box is 9.75ft^3 total.

Got some bracing in...
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/RyanM923/Autotek%20Build/AutotekBuild010.jpg

Tomorrow I'll be doing more bracing, putting 45's in the corners, and getting the front baffle all nice and pretty...more pics to come. :D

Fvck yeah, Ryan! I was waiting for the time when you would just say, "screw it, I'm putting it in."

I've never seen any speaker that big actually move. Can't wait.

did you have this metered last time you had it installed in your vehicle?

If so what was it?

What is the new goal that you have in mind?

Hey now, don't put that kind of pressure on me. :D

I just threw it on my back seat to make sure it even worked, I never had it metered or even had it in a worthwhile box to be metered in.

I'll post some numbers up next Sunday, since the the meet this weekend is in Longview(2 hours from me ).

just FYI using MDF strips to brace your box is a terrible idea. they will most likely break.

get some pieces the innier H & W and cut holes in them and do it that way. i will almost guarantee those braces are going to fracture or flex and not do what they are supposed to do.

otherwise, looking good.

I was actually thining that too, but I didn't want to do my usual 1.25" dowels until I see that the sub is even worth going through more trouble and money for. If they do break, I'll just use some wooden dowels like I have before.

Uploading some more pics now...

Well I did a lot of work today...

Did a little more bracing, put the port in, and put some 45's in the corners.

Got the face on, just need to cut the sub and port holes...
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/RyanM923/Autotek%20Build/AutotekBox009.jpg

All done with a nice lil roundover on the face.

A little angle shot...
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/RyanM923/Autotek%20Build/AutotekBox012.jpg

Port's as wide as a long neck.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/RyanM923/Autotek%20Build/AutotekBox013.jpg

A test fit and size reference.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/RyanM923/Autotek%20Build/AutotekBox014.jpg

All in all I'm pretty happy with how it came out. As stated earlier I'll probably end up using 1.25" wooden dowels for braces instead of the MDF.

My girlfriend drove us home this weekend, so I don't even have my truck here right now(and she drives a crossfire, so I can't take it back with us). I'll have to wait until next weekend to get everything installed and tested, then head to a comp on sunday...that anticipation is killing me.

I didn't have enough leftover MDF for that, unfortunately. I'd really be surprised if this box flexes much at all. The sub is close to three sides and has a brace right next to it on the right side as well.

But if it does, nothing a little $$ and some elbow grease can't fix.

wtf? single baffle?

Double baffle is overrated. :D I looked at the xmax graph on winISD and it won't be moving more than .5" at the frequency I'm playing. Not to mention it's not a terribly heavy sub and it doesn't have a lot of xmax(just a little over an inch p2p).

I also did a single baffle on my three MJ-18's and have had no flex issues...

RAM_Designs
04-20-2008, 01:54 AM
And there's also a couple of 45's on the front corners as well...one just to the left of the sub, and another on the back side of the port like in the original diagram.

bracing looks horrid, should've went with threaded rod or dowels. i would've gone bigger on the 45's too. i would be very surprised if this comes close to a 150, if i had to guess i'd say itll do around a 145.

hopefully you will prove me wrong.

wait that sub is a d1? i thought it was a d2?

the last 11 in XS-2111 stands for the coil configuration. I haven't checked it with a DMM yet, but I haven't seen anywhere that says it's supposed to be D2.

I'll be going with dowels if I have any issues with these. I didn't want to spend any money on this box, and I didn't :D

I'm doing a 147 right now with the MJ's, and this models out to be 4.5-5db louder where I burp at, so 150 is definitely a possibility, although a hard one to reach.

I agree. A lot of people on here do double even triple for no reason Using wooden dowels correctly should brace it properly. The strength to weight ratio for doublig up isnt worth it to me, but hey we all have our own methods. Plus Iam no SPL pro in anyway.

Nah, just to busy this weekend.

There was a comp yesterday from 6-10, about an hour from where I live. I worked all day until about 8pm, and just didn't have the ability to rip out my 3 MJ-18's and get everything set up with the Autotek...and still be able to make it there before it was over.

Not to mention my box got some water damage on it. There was a leak in the attic and it came through the attic door...right on top of about 3 of my boxes I have stored in the garage...so now I'm just pissed that I have to do another box. :(

Just a little update as far as metering went.

I did a 147.6 legal and a 150.2 outlaw...not bad for 1500 watts and the inherent non-loudness of a 4-door truck...I also kept the box below the window line.

Yeah, I'm keeping the autotek for the rest of the season.

The Autotek is louder, but mainly because I built the box to be loud. If I went for an spl box with the MJ's I could have been just as loud pretty easily. But the Autotek takes up a lot less space, so I'm staying with that.

If I didn't hit a 150 with it, I was going to cry. If graphed out 4-5db louder than my 3 MJ's that did a 147.0 outlaw. I knew it'd be hard doing a 150 with it since I wouldn't have a wall anymore...but I'm happy...for now.
