Figured I would make a build log in the new part of the forum with my update on my build since the old thread would now be in the wrong place :D

Today started off with me making a run to Lowes for supplies and stopping by Napa to pick up some misc. parts and a set of head gaskets for my buddies car (my project for tommorow ). Got back and cut the rear deck, cut the side pieces and cut the front beauty panel.

That part was actually really tricky, trying to measure the distance of the side pieces with the wheel wells in the way. I ended up using a combination of a small square, tape measure, and a triangle to get all the necessary measurments for the sides.

I picked up a boat load of fasteners, t-nuts, bolts, washers, and what not. The pics should explain everything :D I also re-did the port, the router was back on line so I made up something new and changed the tuning to 34-35hz to see how I like that. Which about sums it up for todays work (12-8) and boy Im tired......

All thats left now, is a couple more misc. pieces to cut for a few small spots that need filled it, i.e. the front of the 'dance' floor, and two pieces under the rear deck. Oh and also the false floor in the trunk. But that shouldnt take too long. With another days work I can cut all of those pieces and get everything wrapped. Although the trunk I will probably wait on until next weekend when my 9887 arrives :yumyum:

Now on to a few pics, and Ill add all the old ones too for those who haven't seen them.

Oh and wow what a difference already. This thing is soo much more solid and I havent even put in the bolts that go into the rear deck yet. Its bolted to the car at the dance floor, and at the rear deck, the side pieces are bolted between them, then the front panel will bolt into all of them and the enclosure itself. I dont think it will be going anywhere

I noticed a big difference already just in road noise with having the back deck it, its getting closer and closer to being completely sealed off

New car :D

My previous install was in my thunderbird. Its just never loud enough though so I decided since I now have 3 cars that I could spare the back seat. However, I did not want to lose the back window since its my daily driver. This is what resulted

A massive 9 cubic foot enclosure built inside the back of the car. BTW after port displacment, depending on the tuning, its between 7.2~7.5 cube.

 About the lowest I can go is 32. Unless I drop port area, otherwise it wont drop in, it will hit at the top :( 32hz is what the second port was tuned to but it seemed a little low. I know these subs hammer the lows but Im trying to pull up the response a tad by upping the tuning. Just for my musical tastes.

To change ports I will just unbolt the front baffle (beauty panel), pull it out of the car, unbolt the port and swap them, and then bolt in the front baffle. All the beauty panels bolt in and out easily and theres no way to damage any of the wood from taking pieces in and out unless you drop something or are an idiot lol. So far things have turned out fairly well imo and should be pretty sweet when its all done.

Nice thinking ;)

The thing about this build that has been the hardest to come up with so far has been the port configuration for swapping them. What screws me over the most is trying to get 100sq in of port inside a box thats only 13.5inches tall on the inside. Oh that and an 18" woofer but thats a whole different story lol.

I spent a solid day a few saturdays ago messing around in CAD and measuring (and some sawzaw cuttin) and came up with the best possible way to do it.

Turned out good for what it is, Ive got a 7.2~7.5 cube enclosure that can be tuned between 32hz and as high as you wanna go, with atleast 100sq in of port. Well 99.xxx, but it can go up to 180 with an external port if I wanted to. So needless to say I have a lot of room to adjust things without having to do much work.

As far as the rest of my car audio interests go I will be adding in my Alpine 9887 once it comes in this up coming week, and then I will be upgrading the front stage and running active. Two new front stage amps and new mids and tweets. Along with that and Ill fiberglass a new set of pods and do some deadening. Then maybe Ill be satisfied....at least for a little while  Or until I change my mind again and go bigger

Hell yeah man! Ill be interested to see what type of numbers this setup will put up. I would guess high 140's, maybe just squeeze out a 150 with a higher tuned port and a burp but it definately wont do it sealed up, window will have to be down for any decent numbers. Although Im not too familiar with USACi and MECA rules. Hell I couldnt even imagine what class I would get stuck in with this setup. However, its built for one purpose and one purpose only. To be the loudest most practical daily driver I could imagine with this vehicle. And this is what I came up with. One day I think I will get one of the new BTL's and run another KX 2500 on it, then it might burp a 150

With the new port its tuned to 34~35hz. Thanks for the advice btw, it seems to be on pretty solid right now but Ill keep an eye out for it. I still havent added the bracing inside the enclosure yet. Running one 2x2 from the front to the back, and top to the bottom.

BTW it already was very very loud for me. The loudest setup I have had by far. I didnt realize off the bat but learned very quickly. I honestly didnt expect this much out of it, its by far exceeded all of my expectations. The thing that amazes me the most is that through the times I have had it in a listened to it I have steadily been making progress and improving on it so it just keeps getting better and better. MikeyB
04-07-2008, 12:05 AM
alarm?

Yes :emb: Everything as far as the amps and sub go will be secured with special headed screws so they wont be able to be pulled out. Plus it is tinted, will be re-tinted soon. A new alarm will be added this summer once I finish it up.

Also, for those of you that dont know exactly how this is supposed to turn out......there will be another beaunty panel added over the front one (which already covers everything) that will be supported up with threaded rod. I like to call this baffle the 'grill' since it will be covered in grill cloth and have a very extra large cut out in it for the sub and port. This way it will cover everything and for the most part look just like a two seater with nothing in the back but carpeted panels, and then the grill over the front of it.

You will see once its finished, Ive had the idea in my head forever its just hard to explain it lol.

MikeyB
04-07-2008, 12:11 AM
Its gonna be awesome when I put the alarm in it that I plan on. Im going to take the advice of some of the members on here and add a few 125db sirens in the trunk and under the hood :D

With that and the measures I have already and still plan on taking for theft prevention, it will be interesting to see what need be theives will try and do. The car is parked right outside my bedroom window at home, right outside my office window at work, and in the parking lot right near my classes up at school so I pretty much always have my eye on it anyways ;)

BTW who can give me some links to some good alarm systems to look into. I guess I should get something together soon rather than later.....

edit- The more I think about it the more I worry so **** it, Im gonna order one off line and put it in before I start putting more high end equipment in this thing. Im just picturing my brand new 9887 gettin jacked :furious:

lol, you ever seen how many wires come in an alarm box?

i pay proffesionals to instal my alarms.

no point in having it if it doesnt work correctly.

and theives might not try to remove the equipment,

they might just take the whole car,

IF they can start it.?

dont buy a cheap alarm. theives know how to get round em, its definately worth spending moneies on a good alarm

if you want to keep you chit for more than 2 months?

any theif within 2000 feet will know whats up with your ride.

lol, you ever seen how many wires come in an alarm box?

i pay proffesionals to instal my alarms.

no point in having it if it doesnt work correctly.

and theives might not try to remove the equipment,

they might just take the whole car,

IF they can start it.?

dont buy a cheap alarm. theives know how to get round em, its definately worth spending moneies on a good alarm

if you want to keep you chit for more than 2 months?

any theif within 2000 feet will know whats up with your ride.

ive heard of whole installs getting jacked in 45 seconds by a crew of 2 or 3 guys,

they pull up, they do it, they gone, and so is your chitz.

Python is made by DEI or am I wrong  I thought they were basically the same alarms as the Viper counterparts that are manufactured by DEI as well. I definately dont plan on coping out on the alarm if thats what you think I mean.........

I realize its a big job to wire up a complete alarm system which is why Ive never done it before. But I would rather be told from experience pro's how to do it and doing in myself. I know I am more than capable of handling it if instructed the basics of how to. I already have a good idea of what I would have to wire up for the sensors, locks, ect. But the engine cut-off and such would be another story and thats where I would need help.

Theres just no way in hell I would take my car somewhere and have someone work on it for me. Unless I absolutely had to for some reason, but I would much rather be atleast involved. I dont like people messing with my stuff without seeing what they are doing. Plus, if I do it myself I will KNOW its done right. Soldered connections and properly ran ect.

Theres just not any shops around here that I could trust to work on it, or feel comfortable for that matter. And I just like the added security of knowing its right.

I wanted to get some work done today but Im stuck without any supplies to do anything. I need a few more fasteners, and another sheet of MDF. Probably gonna wait until this weekend to finish it up since I get payed this week.

I think I am going to re-cut the front beauty panel since its not completely flush at the top. Carpet would hide it but I want it to be perfect so I think Im gonna cut a new one. I can use the old sheet for the false floor in the back also.

So far this is what I have left to do:

-Re-cut front panel
-Cut two small pieces for under the rear deck
-Cut a piece for the front of the dance floor
-Cut the false floor
-Bolt in the port
-Pull all of the panels back out
-Wrap everything with black carpet
-Put it all back in

Then in the next few weeks Ill have to get some vinyl, then pull everthing out again and re-wrap all the panels with vinyl.

Gettin there........

I got a little bit done today afterall. Basically just put in the two braces I still had to do since that was the only wood I actually had. Ive used like 6 total sheets of MDF on this **** project........

Braces will be resined as well as the front of the enclosure again before I put in the port for good. **** that car is gonna smell again for a few days. Any ideas on how to vent this ****er out?

BTW the gap on top of the port in a couple pics is because I was just holding it in, it sits about a 1/4 of an inch off the bottom of the enclosure. Flushes up just perfect :D

Also, I tried to keep the horizontal brace out of the way of the port but I still wanted to plant it as close to the middle of the back wall as I could to brace it the best so I compromised a little. Hopefully it wont cause any turbulence or noise.

Still need to cut the small piece to hide this gap, also need to cut two small pieces for under the rear deck. And make a false floor in the trunk. For the most part its sealed off although I still have a good amount of leakage into the trunk. But there are a lot of gaps I havent foamed yet.

Ive got new vids coming for you guys :D

It is now tuned to a 32hz spot on and its perfect! The calculator I used for the first port was off due to not accounting port displacment :( Whoops.....so I was tuned below 30hz with that one  28~29 area.....then the next port was at 34~35, and now with the extension I threw on it its right at 32.

If you own a BTL, tune it to 32hz, take my advise :D Unless you like hammering ~20hz material, then go around 28~30, or if you like the >35hz range tune to 34~35. But if you want a good range of of play stick with 32 and you wont be disappointed

BTW I will be making a different port, it will be flared on each end :up2somet:
And it still leaks in the trunk real bad since I havent had time to seal the rest of it off :(

****** cam still has a hard time picking up a lot of the flex, I tried my best though.....

MikeyB
04-27-2008, 02:39 PM
The front window bounces quite a bit, the doors and door panels also move a lot and so do the side windows. It retains the upper end pretty well and I can still play material down to 10hz without a subsonic filter  Throwing almost 3000wrms to it

BTW I just saw that photobucket jacked the quality of the vids a ton more :(

edit- If you watch the vids watch them in full screen! Also, these cars are very rigid, everything in them is solid, the fact that I have as much flex as I do blows my mind. With all the previous setups I have had in my thunderbird it was almost impossible to flex the front window or doors..

I need to paint this **** car but Im not sure if I want to spend hours of my time and a decent chunk of change and then drive it all day worrying about scratching it up. Plus, if I ever did damage the paint I would be so much more upset, I like being able to drive around and now worry about anything hitting the car lol. Thats what the weekend driver is for ;)

MikeyB
05-07-2008, 09:00 PM
Well I finally wrapped the inside panels. Its almost sealed off completely now, I foamed up some spots but theres still some areas I need to fill in and I still have to glass the rest of the enclosure...including the braces cuz I broke them loose.

But heres some pics...

And yes the port will be painted black. I didnt waste my time or the paint on this one because it wont be the last one I will be using. Im going to order a set of duct work flares for the ends of the port and make a new one with the flares.

Sh1t seems weak in the vids, but I'm sure it's the exact opposite in person. I would be willing to bet it's a monster at <40 hz. I wish I would have done my 18s like this. This is the only way I would ever install 18s in a car without doing a wall (which I will never do). This is a very original and functional install. ;)

Thanks guys, yeah the vids really dont do it justice since they are all taken with my ****** *** digi cam but its hella loud. Its fun driving down the freeway on my way out to class and work and watching the front window bouncing lol.

But keep in mind this is just one woofer....I havent seen many vids of single 18 setups moving massive amounts of air or anything. I think this compares very well to other setups I have seen, for just one sub it is impressive enough for me on music, which is exactly what its built for.

MikeyB
05-07-2008, 11:53 PM
And yes, it looovvessss the lows. With <30hz tuning it was unreal, but it sounds much better on most music with the ~32hz tuning.

And this is really the absolutely biggest enclosure you can fit in this car that is one square piece without doing a complete wall and loosing the back window. So really 1 18 is as big as I could do anyways until I wall it off completely.

Im debating on picking up 4 MJ18s and putting them in a large sealed enclosure similar to this, or just waiting till I get another BTL and doing a full wall.

Im in the process of making a grill that will cover the sub and port so its not visible. Im basically making a rectangular frame out of MDF and glass and covering that with black carpet. It will be raised about ~4 inches away from the sub and port. Then im cutting the letters out and painting them red. The letters will go on top of the grill frame like so...this is a little chop of what its gonna look like.

The camera ***** balls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :furious:

If you saw this thing in person you would understand that it does not 'need' more power. It about reaches it limits in excursion if I start playing below tuning. I guess its not clear in any of the videos but it is wangin, lots of excursion. The front window is noticably flexing, enough to catch your attention at a glance. The doors are sucking in and out, my door panels are moving everywhere, and everything in the car is really solid, nothing in these cars is 'loosly' connected and for how solid it is the flex is pretty ridiculous for having just one woofer.

Ive never seen a thunderbird/cougar/mark viii flex as much as this one.

However, the sub will handle more power daily as long as I dont play below tuning too far and drop the size of the enclosure.

This sub is sitting in just over 8 cubic feet of enclosure with a 100 sq in port recieving 2500-2900wrms......its getting plenty of power at the moment and moving a tid bit of air.

Does anyone want to see another hair trick perhaps?

Oh, aight. It just looked like it was getting very little excursion in the video. It wouldn't make sense that a KX2500.1 wouldn't push it really well. The install is great btw . If I ever do an 18 or 2 in a trunk car again, that's exactly how I'll do it. I don't like not having visibility with a wall. Your design seems to be the only smart way to have an 18 in a car.

Have you gotten it metered?

Yeah the fps rate on the camera must be really low or something because it is almost impossible to get it to pick up any movement of anything. If you get it to focus really well and dont move at all it will kind of pick it up.

I was playing like 10hz through the sub and the camera didnt get anything, it was as if the sub still.

And thanks, I guess if there is a smart way to have an 18 in a trunk car this would be it! :D There was just no way I was going to loose the back window in this car lol.

Oh yeah and it has been metered, this setup peaks at around 31~34hz  And sealed up does a 144.X at 31hz and a 147.X at 31hz with the door/window open.

Thats a **** fine score in my opinion for the note that its at. From the get go this setup was meant for daily low-end ground pounding, it has been a complete success. If I wanted to pull high numbers it would be tuned towards the resonant freq. of the car, but theres no way I could drive around listening to any type of music like that....not me.

However, thats the beauty of this design. Once I find my cars peak freq. I will tune in that neighborhood and just have a spl port to drop in if I want to do numbers.

Its still not done though but is getting closer each couple weeks :D

lol, hopefully the next time I bring it out somewhere Ill have the new paint done. not sure when Ill have time for it but after I order my new gun Im spraying this car, basically same color, with just a little bit of metal flake in it to give it a shimmer. Nothing fancy, and maybe a set of 18's or something.

Going more sq oriented.

Gonna do two 15" Q's, and an active front stage.

Yeah I talked to him on the phone last night. Sounded like lots of fun lol, should be a fun tear down someday too.

But yeah, everything came out fairly easy. Got home about 6:30 from work after I sold the sub, grabbed the sawzall and circular saw, sledge hammer, drill and some pry bars.

Then I just cut it up and beat the **** out of it lol, had a good little fire to entertain the guests I had over as well

Yeah, but thats the name of the game. Go bigger, or go better :D

I dont think the day will come that I'll ever stop doing projects just for the fun of the build, and the satisfaction of getting it done. Sure its cool to have a nice install or something, but thats not half the fun. The part I enjoy the most is fabricating something with my own hands, and being able to show it to other people and tell them I did it.
