I am considering building my own box. I know nothing about car audio. I am going with a sealed box, and it will be under 1 cubic foot, not sure on the exact number. What materials are needed? What tools are required? How do you carpet (or are there any other coatings)? I need any tips on construction. I am looking to save some money vs paying someone, but I am not sure I have the stuff to do it. Thanks for any info on this.

get a sheet, or half sheet of MDF (found at home depot or lowes or something like that) and a good wood glue and some clamps and screws and a good set of plans

if your just going for a really small sealed box and your this uninfomed about car stereo... I dont usualy say this, but go buy a prefab. Gonna be cheaper for you unless you have the mats laying around.

I was thinking prefab, but keep getting mixed reviews on them. I was just gonna see how much materials would cost, then see if I had the tools required to build it. I am looking at this box, hope to get a price tomorrow (should be around $60):

What do you think? Thanks.

Build it. You won't get any better without doing it yourself. Use the search function and do a lot of reading here first and you can do it.

$20 and be done with it.

A sheet of MDF = 20
Small box of screws = 3
tube of caulk = 2.50
some wood glue = 2.50

If you have the tools, hours of time.

If you don't have the tools, money and or more time to con someone you know who owns them into letting you borrow them.

Building your own box, yeah you can get louder and probably better SQ, but for your purpose, sounds like you want something cheap that doesn't take up alot of space. A small 10 in a prefab probably do you just fine. Only place you will really save yourself money on a system is if you were planning a custom box (save yourself a ton by doing it yourself) and the actual install.

What about the stealth boxes such as this http://cgi.ebay.com/Q-Logic-Q-Custom-Toyota-4Runner-96-02-10-sub-box_W0QQitemZ120182694033QQihZ002QQcategoryZ50565Q QrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQtrksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQc mdZViewItem
I am not really interested in it, but I have found my current setup getting in the way. This may be an option depending on the sub, but I dont know how it compares to a standard box. Thanks.

:rolleyes:if you are going to spend that much on a box, you could even go to a local shop and get them to build you a custom enclosure for whatever driver you want. and it will sound better than the sealed or prefab

There are no local shops around that are worth anything or do custom works. There are 2 stores, one pushes kicker, the other JL. Since it is a sealed enclosure, there is really no "tuning" that can be done, so all I need is to match up air space, right? Thanks.
