It seems that every year that passes HU manufacturers make their products cheaper looking. I noticed that as the years pass Hu screens keep getting smaller and less detailed.

Everything except for a few manufacturers are crap. Nobody has made a decent head unit in about 5 years. Just like amps. Orion PPI And Phoenix gold all were top of the heap until they were bought by huge companies and are now crap for the most part. Too many useless buttons and crap, and not enough quality and Sound

Actually, Alpine seems to be doing better with their products lately.

9886 is a good step for the majority of consumers.

The 9887 is a solid unit as well.....

I didn't mention it because it's not part of the new lineup. ;)

I got a clarion dxz955mc and I love it. I got my hands on a clarion mav675 screen and I'm likin it so far. But not too much to compare with on the screen.

My main gripe is Alpine is their decision to not put optical out on 98% of their decks.

And they can't seem to stick to any sort of cosmetic scheme. The 9887 theme is real nice and they're changing it it already.

They had the 4 buttons the left of the volume for YEARS. 2002 to 2005. 2006 they released the first 6 button units with the CDA-9856/9857/DVA-9861.

They tweaked it to be even more attractive for 2007.

Now with the '08 units they move the 6 buttons BACK to other side of the knob. MAke up your mind Alpine.

The CDA-9886 is ugly as hell compared to the 9887.

PG is far from top notch in anyhing, I owned a Xenon, and a Tantrum. Compared to the old stuff like MS2125 and other M series as well as ZX series and titaniums, the new ones are crap. They dont demand as much money for them either

I don't even know what the purpose of an optical out is.

my guess is better sound, or just a marketing gimmick like digital amps

I remember when the Phoenix Gold M series were their bottom of the line...by todays standards they would be considered top of the line.... ....I've had several of the older MS series...I still have one MS275 I was thinking about using in an install soon....

Maybe because only .0001% of potential customers actually want to use that feature.

The optical out is to connect to processors such as the h701 etc.

^^^^^ couldn't agree more. For headunits, I go with Alpine, Eclipse or Premier. That's it. Those three seem to be the main ones with their isht together.

Well considering they have the PXA-H701 and they know many are using it in 4 way mode. I'm sure Alpine has someone working for them that knows competitors use this processor for non 5.1 systems.

I don't think it's fair to have to buy a DVD player just for optical out.

People often say this, and havent even owned an old school amp. I for one Own an m44, and have ran the xenon line, and their was no audible difference period. The xenons had a bad run the first time around, but that problem was fixed many years ago. One of pgs most overbuilt amps period. I dont know what amp you were looking at, but the xenons were not expensive. If anything the titaniums were way more expensive amps..

Too bad for the 99.999% of guys who don't.
