I just wanted to ask a question about tunning a box.. Is there any advantage from an SPL standpoint about tunning a box at a different frequency then what the manufacture suggests.

Say I have a driver that the specs call for a minumum of 2.34 cf internal volume and 4"x 2 ports and the tunning frequency of 45 hz. Would there be any advantage to deviate from the stock specs...say if I was to tune the box to 35hz??

generally, for max spl, you wanna tune at your vehicle's resonant frequency. also, more port area means the more air your going to move through it's opening. usually lower tuning results in lower spl.

Thanks alot for your reply.... How would I know what my vehicle's resonant frequency is? It's an 06 Mustang GT.
So, if I want to be louder and sq isn't really an issue, then I would want to tune high, say like 40-45hz?

every car has a different res. freq. you will need a meter to find it. if you have one and want ot find it....lmk

otherwise, yes...tune in the mid 40's

It depends on what frequencies you want to be loud. The higher you tune, the less bandwidth your sub will have but the higher the peak frequency may be. That being a very general statement that doesn't always apply though. One thing that is true, is that you will lose bandwidth and low frequency extension by tuning higher. It may meter higher, but it won't always be louder to the ear.

are you trying to get as loud as possible and dont care how good it sounds? if so, follow trixter's advise.

Well, it really depends on a lot of things but in the lower frequencies, yes, it should be louder, even on a meter.

Output is VERY much frequency dependent.

Here is an example of what I mean:

The red line shows a system with a high tuning frequency while the green line shows a setup with a lower tuning frequency. Below 40hz, the green setup will more than likely sound louder and meter louder than the red setup. But, if you were going to compete, the higher tuned enclosure would have an advantage.

This will also be vehicle dependent so sometimes tuning too high can be detrimental to being loud.

everyone is right so far but i think that every vehicle has 2 frequency notes two like a low and a high cuz tuned low like 36 my car sounds good but like tuned high like 50's or higher it can put up some numbers on the tl, as of last season usaci schedule, i did a 141.0 with 2 12's tuned at like 65 but that box was tuned too high for my car so if bring it down some it should get louder but u also have to take in account your amp settings also. u can't just go to the lanes with your gain all the way up and your db slopes and such not set it will kill you

wow.. I never knew all that. I guess I need to tune around 40hz then work my way down to 35hz to see which is better. Thanks for your help

It's a combination of driver properties, vehicle resonant frequency, and vehicle transfer function.
