I find when I have sub AND port facing the back of my hatch I get bad rattles so I go sub up port back. Just leave enough space for the port to breathe, you don't want to block it.

should it be on the drivers side or pass side? Or doesnt matter?

tough call, every car's different but I like mine with the port on the opposite side of the driver.

got it from lancer1978, great guy. I beleive he said 20 hours or so on a D2 recone. This is a temp box. I think Ill go sub up port on pass side. Im just playin right now. If I dont like it Ill build another. I dont think i have enough room on the box to cut a hole with it facing back. Ill measure tonight, might try that.
