View Full Version : determining box volume of an angled box

i still have no idea how to do this at all so say

my box is 53in long, 18inch tall, 4in top depth, 12in bottom depth what would that equal out to? and care to explain it?

you could
1. google trapezoid volume formula
2. try the12volt for their calc.
3. break the trapezoid into rectangle and triangle volumes to get trap volume.

Length x average depth x height

53L x 8D x 18H = 7632in^2

Take half of the sum of the top and bottom depth to find the average depth

53, 8, 18... 8x18= 144... 144x52= 7632/ 2 (b/c it's a tri.) = 3816 in cubed.

Then you do 4x18x53= 3816+3816 + 7632... then divide that by 1728 (1 cubic foot) and you get
4.42 cubes

You have to take into account wood thickness.

yes, 3.2 cubes after subtractiong wood volume.

It would take trig and more time than I want to spend to find that accuracy.

~3.2 is good enough though :)

It also depends on how you cut the front, top/bottom, and sides as to how the outside dimensions correlate to the inside :)

Let me make a terrible MS paint drawing ... will help explanation.

In the top picture, the wood thickness is .75 + the width of the angled cut.

In the bottom picture, it would only require .75 to be subtracted for internal volume calculation :)

It would be very hard to build a box like that.... To get a good angle, you need to angle both pieces.

If you only angle one piece, and try to butt it up with a square edge, the thicknesses wont match up ;)

Assuming all other dimensions are the same (top depth, bottom depth, and height) then the first picture would have a higher volume than the bottom.

At least this is how I based my argument. probably would've been good to know in the beginning :laugh:
