View Full Version : CSS SDX15: 4 cubes @ 25
hempy

I just got my CSS SDX15 yesterday, and I decided on a box. Originally I was going to seal it a fiberglass box w/ amp rack, but I hate having to deal with glassing in the cold and I don't have the time to finish within the break.
The recommended car box is 4 cubes at 25 hz with 2 4" aeros 20" long, walls lined. The port tubes I bought are 17", but I'm not sure if that represents the tube length or overall port length. I will need to add a 90* bend, so hopefully that wind up accounting for the extra length. I would be measuring the line down the center, right?
I'm going to have it firing at the read of my cherokee, with the ports facing back on the right side. I'm going to add on an amp rack on the back to keep everything clean, with beauty panels on the front and back. I have some leftover black PE carpet, but I may go with vinyl or something that looks more stock. I'll probably use black laminate on the front as well.

I was originally going to use t-nuts for the trim pieces, but I may have to come up with something creative to get the thin middle parts tight. I'll probably just cut off 1/8" from some threaded inserts.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0274.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0275.jpg
Siliconed everything up (just to be sure):
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0276.jpg
I've been searching for a while for stuff to line the walls of enclosures. Batting is always too thin and expensive, foam sheets are expensive and small, but I found this stuff today at Wally World for 9 bucks. I also think I'll have enough extra to do my ht enclosure.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0277.jpg
I picked up this to run the power wires through. I can't seem to find any smaller ones for the speaker/rca wires though.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0279.jpg
I finally found a way to connect the aero port tubes to the 90* elbows that I got at Lowe's. I used some foam pipe insulation and hot glued it around the tube. It sits tight and won't move or shift.

Holy ****ing ****. For a first vinyl job, this turned out awesome. I'm still working on the amp panel, which is posing a much larger problem, but I think it'll still look presentable. If not, I can just restretch it.

I just stretched it w/o glue. I wasn't sure about how to do any vinyl work, so I asked the guy that runs a custom interior place behind our shop.

Wow, this is a really beautiful build.
I was looking into vinyling my next build. Are there any pointers that you could offer after working with it? Did you have any problems with it ripping at the staples?

There was a little, but since I had the staple line at least 1/4" away from the corner/edge, it didn't really cause many problems. I would suggest buying good vinyl, at least 2-way. I was strapped for time (trying to finish in my winter break) so I had to go with what matched best locally. The stuff I got *****, but it worked out. Round edges are much easier to stretch around than corners.
Weeeelll...
I got the box into the car after work tonight. After this point all of the work will be done inside the car. I still have lots to do. Run new 1/0, route wires in box, screw in cable holders, run another 12v wire for the fans/relays, probably wire some sort of led lighting for inside, i still have fab work to do with the fans, too. So lots to do.

Sooo snug:

The amps may be a little crooked... I still need to nudge them around a little:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0006.jpg
I did run into a possibly large problem today though. Right now I have 2 wire holes cut, one on each side, near the bottom. I made the box about 1" shorter than the space between my wells. Not enough space for wire on each side. Luckily I only cut the fabric out of one hole, so one side looks like there isn't even a hole. This works, but now I need my power/speaker/rca wires all to cross for about a foot. Is there any way to effectively shield my rca/speaker wires from thw rest?
I've also been thinking about the chinese finger trap type flex loom, but I can't seemt o find anything larger than 1/0...any suggestions? (I have split loom that will fit everything now)
Space to run all of my wiring :(

Looking good. I wouldn't worry much about having noise because of signal wires being close to power wires. I've never had that problem before.
I'll be shipping the scraps out tomorrow; I've been busy the past couple of days.

Well, I didn't quite make my deadline, but it was **** close. Mounting posed unseen problems, as I had to mount it vertically due to the design. I used the port cutouts to pile wood inside to rest the motor on until I had started a few screws.
The security screws I have aren't long enough, so now I need to order some online. It will give me the time I need to get two screws in that are giving me trouble. I just have flatheads in there for now.
I think even without the security screws, this thing will take some time to dismantle. I may take the time to add more bolts on the back end of the box since the one in the amp rack are so close to the edge. But that may involve getting it up on the lift and moving my tank out of the way for a bit.
Wtf...****ing cats:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0376.jpg
Torquing down the amp panel bolts pulled some of the inserts out, so I tapped some washers and screwed them in around the inserts. Now they aren't going anywhere:

Installed mids:

Amp panel (I may add white cathodes to the box in the future, since I have the relay for it wired already):

I had trouble with 2 holes, so i just put some gasket caulk/tape stuff in them and it works leakfree for now:

this has been a very beautiful build. Im looking forward to its completion and your opinion of the sub. It looks very capable of some serious low end....

It'll probably be sometime Friday or this weekend. I just haven't had the time between work and school to get enough listening/testing time in as I would like. I also need to set the gain correctly on both amps. I basically just set them low and put everything in. Once I've played with it for a bit I'll sit down and set everything.
I was a little surprised at the coil impedance.. They're listed at 1.8, while they read 3.6-4.0 each. I know impedance rise will change the load, but this was fresh out of the box, and I've had other woofers read much closer to publish specifications.

Just got it today. I'm actually looking to cover up the fans. Since apparently case fans don't reverse with reversed voltage, I had to switch one of the sets around, ruining my nice symmetry. So im going to cut some square rings to fit the holes and stretch the cloth over them. Hopefully it'll allow enough airflow. If not, I can always up the voltage. I think I have them at 6 right now.

me and my cousin installed my SDX15 this morning and it sounds amazing :-). Its uber accurate and doesn't miss a note on metal songs with fast bass or double or triple bass. I've got mine 3.7 cubes sealed. Didn't make a thread since I have no pics and don't want to get stoned to death hehe.

Did yours have serious overgluing on the mounting holes?
Sorry about not getting a review out guys, but I've been crazy bust with school and being lazy. Plus I feel I need more power right now. But I'll get one out eventually. I need to get back into the box and tweak my gains and finally mount those last 2 bolts.
I do like it though. A lot. I just feel bad having it in my car. I feel like it wants to be inside.

haha. Nah I had no glue around my mounting holes. maybe the machine got a little generious with yours. Mine sounds great off 1000 watts. I listen to it with the gains at 1/4 on the bass knob. It gets insane when I turn it all the way up to halfway. Are you running a Sundown 1500D or SAE1000?

Well, I've been playing around with some baffle panels for my front stage, and I figured I'd tack em onto this thread rather than starting a whole new one. I wanted a little more substantial mount for my woofers and I needed to move my tweeter down since it was way too harsh up by my door handle.
I used 1/2" mdf for the base and 3/4" for the actual baffle part. I put 2-3 coats of resin on them to keep them semi-waterproof, and I have about 13 t-nuts per side, bolted to the door with 1/4" hex bolts. I got lucky at Joann's and found about 3 yards of 2-way vinyl for 7 bucks, and it matched almost perfectly.
I can't really think of anything else to say about them, so I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking. Lemme know if you guys have any questions!

I took a fluted laminate flush trim bit from Lowes and gound it down until I had an 1/8" nub on the end. I was kind of surprised that no one makes/sells something like/for this.
