View Full Version : Alpine cda-7998 or another suggestions.
I'm looking to buy a Alpine cda-7998, the only ones I can find are on Ebay for usually over 200$ when bidding ends. Reason I'm wanting this is because i have amps powering the fronts and mids and the HU looks perfect for them. Should I go this route or another? and suggestions on a HU better performing/features than than the 7998 with or without a built in pre-amp?

That is a great unit, Just pay it, you won't get a better deck for that price.

After losing 2 auctions in a row I finally won one for $305. I've seen them sell on forums for $500. I mainly like it because it matches my interior amber lights perfectly and has a phantom face. I'd say get it, but you won't find it for less than $200 anywhere.

I bought one for $350, its a really nice deck and very unique with 1.5 din and folding face plate. These are rare these days and won't go under $250 for sure
The face on them can they also detach to provent no faced HU thieves from being happy after they've gotten it?

no they can't be detached, tint your windows and the fantom face will make it seem invisible ;)

I don't think no faced head units appeal to very many thieves.

The whole premise (idea) behind its design is to make it appear like a deck with the detachable face removed. Which it pulls off admirably.
If you intent on getting one plan on spending at least $275 - $300 the ones in nicer shape complete with the carton, cage, user manual and remote will obviously command more money.
I can't think of a deck available right now that I would be willing to replace the 7998 with.

I wanted one until people don't me the phantom face mechanism doesn't last.
Don't know much about crack heads or if one jacked my friends car back then but they took an Alpine cda-9855 w/o the face from him after bashing through the window.

I love my 7998. I'm using it to run a set of 2-way components active, along with a single 12" sub for my lows. So many EQ settings, time alignment, etc.....like others have said in this thread, I can't think of another deck I'd want to replace mine with.
If you can find one for $300 or under in great shape, I'd go for it. It's a fantastic SQ deck with all the tricks.

I've had two 7998's, one for over a year and a half. Neither had any issues with the mechanism. I recenlty borrowed my sister's brand new one till I got my CD7000 back from Eclipse. I may end up buying hers.

I have had mine for years and never had trouble with the mechanism and I use it even when the temps drop to -20 degrees so I would say they are pretty durable.
If anything I would send it out and have the caps in the power supply and preamp stage upgraded to Auricap's, Blackgates or Hovlands to further its already stellar performance.
