Well I just finished the 98 Mustang work log, and then immediately got a new vehicle... lol bye bye Mustang.

So thus starts the WRX work log. This is gonna be over the next few weeks, so no extraordinary progress between pics. But here you go:
P/S, this is also gonna be my daily driven work vehicle, so nothing crazy is going to happen in here. No walls or crazy fiberglass, just trying for a good clean system, on a car with not a lot of info yet.

The Car:

The Dash:
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/5102/radiosideht7.jpg
Still trying to figure if I want to use the factory radio and a fancy hi/low converter (to maintain the 6 disk changer and save some money, or install a nice nav unit.

OK, for the rear speakers, take out a screw in the handle area where you pull the door shut, pop that piece straight up evenly (not up and out like previous model year, broke my first tab on first piece:verymad: ) This reveals two more screws, remove them. Then inside the handle to open the door there is one screw, remove it. In the corner there is a piece of black plastic trim (little triangle on the door.) Pull it straight out and twist slightly to the front as it comes out. Then starting at the bottom, pull the door straight out to pop out the little plastic compression fasteners. At the top of the doors, there is no fasteners, when it feels like just the top 1/4 is still being held in, slide the door straight up along the path of the window and pull the panel off.

The factory speakers are retained by a plastic shroud and three screws, remove the whole thing by taking out the three screws. In the rear, 6 1/2s fit perfect in the door, and the window doesn't get in the way at all, so just drill holes in the door for the screws and directly mount the speakers.

FRONT SPEAKERS on the other hand are a different story. The Infinities I put in the front are not that deep, and still hit the glass. Also, the factory speaker holders position the speaker too close to the doors, and the tweeters push against the grill in the door, so I made my own adapters, though I think if you buy the ones for last year, they probably still fit. Since this actually required some handy-work, here are the quick adapters I made.
http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/1953/s5000656fr8.jpg

If you notice the two screws just to the left of the wood, they hold in the crossovers. I installed all 4 crossovers in the same fashion in each door.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/4678/s5000657st8.jpg

In the front the speaker wire is outside the door, so I had to drill a small hole to run the speaker wire through to the crossover, and secured the wire to the bracket. In the rear its all internal, and no where near moving parts, so no worries.

SPECIAL THANKS!!!! To Manny at T-Rex Car Audio. Even when I was offering to pay for it, he encurged me to "just go for it man" and though I broke one tab, still not going to hold it against him ;-) Great guy and thanks for the help.

Well I usually turn this into a paint layout so it all looks neat, but today I really didn't care. you get the idea here, its just not as pretty. All the wood is cut, should have some pics of the build later today or tomorrow.

What subs are you using? L7s that was in the mustang?

DarkFox
12-01-2007, 03:40 PM
yeah, the L7s from the stang. I know I know.. its a bit small and not alot of port area, but still need useable space in the back. if it sounds like poop, easy enough to cutout a peice big enough to cover port and turn this into a 3.6ish sealed enclosure

DarkFox
12-03-2007, 12:45 AM
yeah the port area is a little small but if I increase port area, i also get more port dispalcement leaving either a smaller box which is effectively defeating the added port area or am forced to make the box bigger alltogether which really wasnt a option cause I still need some storage space back there. It was the best I can do in the given area. I generaly like to do about 2.5 to 3.5 cubic feet per 12" L7 with about 30^2in of port area each. This box does not fit either of those, but was only choice. Should be fine, just a bit boomy, more output but similar slope to a sealed box of equal size.

Patiently awaiting further install pics and maybe some vids of those blowing that cover all over the place lol.

DarkFox
12-03-2007, 04:48 PM
lol... I wonder that myself. I dont think it will blow it loose unless it breaks the locking mechanism on the side closer to the seats. It is spring loaded into a recess on both sides there. As for the back side, you have to pull it farther open then it slides into slots in the panels and locks itself about a inch and 1/2 forward of its entry point.

So I posted in the wiring and instalation forum about a week ago to try and figure out how to get my radio out, and no one had done one before but had been given some advice, that is should just pull out with a tool. I decided to pull at it with just my fingernails today to see how resilient it was and POP. I though I broke a tab at first then realized the only thing being held in was the bottom left by just a little bit of material.... pulled at it to see if i could size up the damage and the whole thing pulled out. NOTHING BROKEN! yay! Bottom line, 08 Impreza = easy mode HU install

very nice, its amazing when its that easy lol. I had something similar with the door panels on my truck. I was used to having to find the hidden screws and then pop all the little plastic push pins and such. Was much easier pop 2 little screws and they just slid up. Hoping the dash will be as easy when I attack it.

PS whats the scent on that little blue air freshener ya got there thats poking out of the air vent??? Was trying to figure out what it was and then remembered my friend had some of those style air fresheners

ahh lol. Not sure if I missed it but did you decide on what is going in the dash? Keeping the factory HU or are you going with a new HU? Just guessing there is something going back in if you were pulling the factory one.

Unless of course you were like me and just pulling it apart for the sake of it.

I like that system plan sounds like its gonna be pretty sweet. How are you enjoying doing this work in the nice 20°-30° weather we are having lately. Kinda hoping to start on my truck but not sure how well running wires in 20° weather with snow on the underside will go. May have to wait for one of these wonderful new england warm-up days.

Pfffft looks like the right amount of screws too me, but then again I like screws in boxes.

DarkFox
12-04-2007, 04:11 PM
well all the seems lined up very well (no gaps at all), I used a LOT of titebond 2 (thats why it glossy near all the seems, wiping off the excess, and a LOT of countersunk, 1 5/8" screws. don't have to worry about the box being sturdy. LOL

As for the weather, well the work log gives me a good excuse to run in the house alot during the install. Also, I am running the wires under the hood first, so I can fire up the car and kick the heater on high for everything inside. Though they didn't package my wiring harness with all my stuff >.< Oh well, got to go to best buy now. not going to get too much stuff done tonight. (got to raid, if you know what that is, you understand the addiction) But hopefully tomorrow there is alot of progress to post.

Oh, to answer a system related question, fwb 1234 asked what I can fit, well I could fit alot bigger there, probably more like 5^3ft if I didnt want to come above the seat, but this is smaller as i wanted to save some storage space. Need to drive this thing everyday for work.

So I am running my own ground back. I know some say this is not necessary or that unless you run a certain gauge its better to use the chassis. Whatever, all that aside, running 4ga power and ground all the way back to a 6 farad cap.

Nope! lol.

Also, I know alot of people don't like these, but dam guys, everything changes. You cant just say you hate everything that changes.... They should just leave them all boxy... like turbocharged bricks with wheels!!! or oh..... bug eyes ftw!?!

As for the WRC rally car, exactly like it in 08, wagon and everything. Also, this is the first year the STi is going to be a wagon :fyi:

Subaru is gonna upset the self proclaimed die hard fans, but they are going to invite a much larger market to come take a look. Just bring your checkbooks, the new ones are not any cheaper.

EDIT: I will concede however that it looks much more like a street car then a rally car, which does in fact, make me sad, but the suspension is all still there, just on a flashier body. so were still good!

I have driven and seen the hatchback version, and I must say it would be a VERY hard choice between that and the sedan... They are both pretty cool little cars... I would personally buy a rabbit or Jetta over one, but thats more luxury vs. performance (as in AWD, bigger engine...)

Anyways nice car!

lol... Because the shape of the car is EVERYTHING thing right? It's not the thousands they invest on the engine, and suspension, etc...

Anyways it's not something to argue about... It's really just a great car for mid-westerners and north-east people... Reliable and pretty, yet rugged.

the RCAs were the really thick stinger ones. and the amps are on both the front and back of box.
