didnt do anything today except finish the 2x4 bracing on the back.

the back of the box is VERY sturdy, its not going to flex a bit.

the top part will be glassed with the mids/highs angled down at me at like a 22.5 degree angle.

the front baffle is 20.5" tall, and the overall diameter of the MT is 18.5" lol. ill have like 1" on top and bottom haha

well i made some mounting points for the wall. its ugly, but its the only way i could get the bolts in there. it will be covered though, so it doesnt matter lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF1967.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF1968.jpg

theres no bolts or mounting points at all up front (right behind the front seats)...only way i can get some bolts here would be to weld them to the floor...should i do that? is the gas tank right under that?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF1969.jpg

the wall WILL be in, and bolted down tomorow!

ufvj2172
10-04-2007, 08:37 PM
heres what i got done today. its very sturdy, and i dont think its going anywhere. ill also have 4 huge bolts attached from the little rear seat latch things (that hold the vertical part of the seat in the upright position) to the back of the box, so those 4 bolts should keep the box from ever projecting forward in an accident, or at least help it alot from not just flying on me.

bolted into the fuel pump area, and no, i didnt hit ANYTHING. lol

that bolt barely touches that wire loom, so its not harming a thing.

hope it fits.

the bottom

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF1978.jpg

the 3 little cutouts on the bottom are for the bolts to tuck in, so the box sits flat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF1979.jpg

the top and bottom side overhangs is so the 2nd side baffles go in there...gotta cut those tomorow.

You might not. Its about the same as having another passenger i suppose. I will suggest you mount the sub as low as possible though, otherwise you will throw off the center of gravity and handling will suffer.

next on the list is to resin everything, and fill the screw holes on the ports with bondo so the baffle has no holes in it

Better more then too little screws? Why are people complaining because he used few too many screws? He's just being overcautious, plus he said he's going to fill em anyways. Second box I seen with interchangeable ports.

more screws cant hurt....if thats what you're saying

It can when it starts to weaken the wood. Plywood, just like MDF, has layers that you're driving the screws into. If you put a bunch of screws in between the same layers and if the screws are only a few inches apart, it is very possible to start to split the layer. Even if it's not a blatant split, it is still putting pressure on the layers of the wood at the ends.

There really is no strength increase from having two billion screws and it only has cons -- it's heavier, takes way more time, and it costs more. All that and it doesn't make things any stronger... I will never understand the point.

If you're referring to liquid nails, "some dude" is right... Can it be used as a sealant..? I dont know... but it is made for bonding **** together. :fyi:

req
10-18-2007, 02:58 PM
um. why not? why cant it be a sealant? it is a goop that turns really hard, right?

its called ingenuity. using things that are not directly created for said purpose, and creating new ways to apply these products. id rather use it for a sealant when dealing with wood because wood glue works better than LN when bonding wood->wood.

when i dealth with LN the crap was solid as a rock when it cured

miker
10-18-2007, 03:11 PM
LN is a great adhesive. I would personally get glue that is made for wet areas. Not to hold the box together, but put a strip of it all the way along the seems and smooth it out over them. That is if it is THAT necessary to be super air tight.

Poor Cooper:( will there be any not reversible things done? Or will it look completely normal if you were to replace the back seat?

skeptikal

when i dealth with LN the crap was solid as a rock when it cured

I do the same thing, it takes way less time to 'cure' than typical silicone sealant and its easier to put on imo (with the little caulk gun).

But eventually i resin over it so it probably doesnt matter lol

I know this is two pages old at the point, but just got caught up with where I last read. Liquid Nails does dry super hard and thats the problem with using it as a sealant. Boxes flex. When they do and you have a super hard unforgiving "sealant" (adhesive) then you run the risk of cracking the sealant and not being sealed anymore. As compared to other sealants, say latex for example. They are made to remain slightly soft and flexible, so that when whatever they are sealing moves a little bit, it stays sealed over time.

Short description:
Latex caulk = long term sealant
Liquid Nails = long term (and insanely strong) bonding material

use good caulk for sealing seams, luquid nails for layering sheets of lumber, or glueing cats to walls....

ufvj2172
10-19-2007, 12:36 AM
Tite bond is a **** ton stronger than LN imo.

so just get a latex caulk?

DarkFox
10-19-2007, 12:42 AM
In all my boxes I Titebond anywhere wood meats as I build, then use a good latex caulk on all the inside seems. i agree if your in need of a filler, then the saw dust / wood glud is a dam good combo as well (thats basicaly all MDF is)

ufvj2172
10-19-2007, 01:22 AM

Got Kicker?

-2x KX1200.1s
-1x KX300.2
-1x KX500.2 (borrowing this to see if it will power my mids good, if i like it, ill buy it. if not, ill be getting an 800.2 lol)
-1x KQ5 EQ

the grille from the kx300.2 (silver) was how they were painted, they look nice that way, but i think all black will match better in my car. the flash makes the black paint i used look like primer, in real life, it looks 100000x better

there is no end caps, the grille is longer then the amp. its not like your model KX amps.

i took the kicker logo off, i wanted it black, thats why i painted it. lol

my whole exterior will be black, everything...

so i wanted to continue the theme inside.

took the box out to resin inside, glass around the rings for the 6.5s, and paint the sides/top black. reason for painting is becuase i have a sunroof (yes, in the back) and the 2 back windows is like 10" away from the box, and even with 5% tint, when the sun was really bright, you could see the birch a little. i have 16 cans of black paint from walmart laying around, so i figured why paint it, rather than spend more and throw another layer of 5 on the windows, the paint was only 97 cents each lol.

woulda backed out, but dads trailer was blocking the garage :(

resined some of the corners (need more mat) and painted inside behind the port, and i was bored so i painted it all (with the 50hz port in, you could see all the way behind the sub so i wanted it to be all black so i just painted the whole thing)

relocating some gauges to the cup holders.

youll see where the cup holders were when i put the gauges in the car tomorow, and youll see why i put the gauges there. u cant even fit a cup in these 2 holders, was pointless for MINI to put them there, lol

just finished making the rings, i really like how it turned out. im still debating on covering the ring (not much of the ring is shown anyways) so i think im going to paint it, would be 100x easier and faster.

you guys think i should paint them black (to match the ring around the gauge) or silver (to match the cup holder trim)?

let me know what you think!

gauges, rings, and cup holder trim

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF2101.jpg

the rings. i used a drill press and the bit was angled, so thats how they came out. i could easily break them with my hands, but when you tighten the gauge to it, it holds perfect.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF2103.jpg

in the cup holder trim, perfect fit!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF2104.jpg

on the gauges

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/pimpedout92x/Mini%20Wall/DSCF2105.jpg

this is pretty much how its going to sit in the car, the rings will be a little bit lower than the cup holder trim, and the top of the gauge will be flush with the top of the cup holder trim
