can you use zune on ipod ready headunits?

every new headunit is "ipod ready," but can you use a zune instead of an ipod on it?

is it software based or just the type of plug in the device uses? i got to play with a zune today and will most definitly be getting one in the near future...

zune would have to go through a 1.5mm aux port, the ipod stuff works through the ipod dock connector.
