Port Area..?

How do you determine the port area or cross area for your sub/box..?

I figure that most ported boxes need 12-15 sq. in. of port per cubic foot.

I mean.. How do you choose it? I know how to calculate port volume. Is there a rule of thumb? eg: 12 sq.in. per every cube?
