ok so i have a new mtx 9500 and i am going to be building a box for it starting in a few moments. i just went outside and took a few measurements and heres what i came up with.

i know i know its a crude drawing on ms paint

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/mtx9500box.jpg

so im getting a 1" mdf ring made for the speaker and the dark grey are will be fiberglassed. the sides and top of the box will be made out of 3/4 mdf and the bottom of the box will be fiberglassed as it will easily flow with the contours of the bottom of my truck and will allow me more air space. then after i construct the box i will figure out how many ^3ft of air space i have after displacement of the driver and i will make a port to tune the box to 35hz. the recommended size for a box for this woofer from mtx is 1.75^3ft oh and i will also be raising my back seat 3" this is the most i can lift it so that someone my height (6'2") can sit in the back without hitting their head on the roof.

anyways im off to home depot with my drawings to get some wood cut!

just got back from home depot got my wood screws glue gloves and painter suit. im all set. and they even cut my wood for me for free! $67 in materials. not including the fiberglass ive had sitting in my garage for 2 years.

so i guess the rear seats not going back in? i'm doing a build right now in almost the same vehicle (99 silverado http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242796) but the seat has to stay. i've only set the wood, then glassed once. i didn't like the way it turned out. i usually lay the glass on the floor, then glass the wood on, and trim the edges from the floor. good luck, i'll be watching :pullover:

nope the seat is going back in. im just going to raise it 3" i sat in is stock. measured form the top of my head to the roof and found i have 3.25 inches to spare. so i raised the seat 3" to fit the sub and im all good!

2 bolts on each side and 1 in the center of the back.

on one side the box comes close to the bolts but the bolts are on the outside of the box. the other side the bolts are inside the box. ill have to seal the seat bracket once i put the top on. and the back middle bolt that hold the center of the seat is behind the box. there is about an inch between the box and my back cab wall.

nothing is impossible you just gotta get creative!

ok 3rd layer is done!!!! ive gone through 1.25 gallons of resin already and close to 50sq ft of mat. ill have to stock up when i get ready to add the mdf ring in. and i guess ill use some cheese cloth to get the beginning shape. so just one more layer on the inside and that should be good and sturdy!!!

good call on the back seat. I raised my friends 4" with C channel steel. Really simple but If i can get some 3" after the box is built we might move it down. How tall is your box you are making. The one i am in the process of is 12" front, 11" back. 54" wide. 14" deep. And it comes out to around 3.5-3.8cu ft. Were deciding on subs and port right now.

I'm working on a very similar project, my friend has his heart set on 4 12's under the back seat. Trouble no worries about what kind of subs or whatever. So kinda thinking after this box is built can build a new one to fit some better stuff. Also fiberglass is the only way to go. The box we built is 100% mdf so far lol, so it was quite interesting test fitting and cutting to try and maximize the space under those seats. Planning on only listing it about 2" Good luck on finishing up, definitly going to be following this build.

there will never be enough air space for 4 12's unless you lift the seat....

out of the truck.

Yea its very limited, honestly I'm pretty skeptical as to how it will sound but we got 2 upfiring subs and 2 downfiring with about 0.7 net per sub and mounting depth of 5.5" Need to lift the seat at least 2 inches to make it fit. Probably will try and make a different box after with a little more seat lift. Or drop down to 2 better or 1 much better sub.

Anxiously awaiting progress on this box, lookin good so far:)

actually i had to hold construction of the box because i just bagged the front of my truck. so that took presidencies over the box as i couldn't use my truck during that time. but now tis finished so i can get back to work on the box. im hella stoked to hear my new sub!

Nice work so far :) I know it's a little late for this suggestion . But next time make a dato cut on the flat face of the enclosure . Then staple your fleece in the dato . Makes smoothing the transition between mdf and glass so much simpler and easier :)

well i going to go do some more work on it. gotta figure out the air space so i can calculate my ports/s

Bigrick31
07-22-2007, 02:02 PM
so my box is 4.824^3ft frigin huge!!!!!! well the sub displaces .9 cu ft so im down to 3.924 and then port area as well. just gotta calculate my ports now.

might be late. but Kitty Hair would have been better to fill the gaps then using the fleece

yea im going to lay that over the top of the fleece. some of the gaps were kinda big thats why i went with fleece first and i didnt feel like messing with fiberglass at that moment either. lol.

Bigrick31
07-22-2007, 02:15 PM
so if anyone is board and wants to give me port dimensions useing either 3 or 4" pvc to tune my box to 35hz that would be kick @ss!

Rawr-DQ
07-22-2007, 09:07 PM
Lol, keep it up, you'll ahve a ton of sanding ahead of you it you wanna make it look real nice.

Immacomputer
07-22-2007, 09:44 PM
Two 4" PVC ports with each of them being 12.5" long will give you a 35hz tuning frequency and a net volume of about 3.6 cubic feet. Three 4" ports each being 21" long will give you a 35hz tuning and a 3.4 net box volume.

Is this for a single 10"? If so, it's going to be way too big.

boomintahoe
07-22-2007, 09:52 PM
Looks like a 12. IMO, too big for a box under the rear seat. But looks like he's making it possible.

Bigrick31
07-22-2007, 11:19 PM
one single 12 and and im going with 2 3" ports with a flare 5.52" long that should give me 35hz at the 4.634^3ft of space i have my sub only displace .19 not .9 like i mis read

Bigrick31
07-23-2007, 01:55 AM
so heres what we got today

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture068-1.jpg
this is where i planned for the stock bolts of the truck the ones that usually hold dont the seat to come in through the speaker box. as you can see i took a piece of wood for the bolts to go through and then using wooden dowels i hot glued the piece to my box to figure out the depth of the wooden bracket.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture069-1.jpg

here i covered the bracket with fiberglass

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture067-1.jpg

laying out my ports. got some nifty stuff from the hardware store to make my ports out of

Bigrick31
07-23-2007, 02:03 AM
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture070-1.jpg
so i went to the plumbing section of the hardware store to find some pipe to use for my ports. i cant remember what the stuff is called its black tubing not pvc well anyways as i was heading out i noticed the plugs used to mount in floors so the description said and i really liked the shinny blue ring on them so i decided i would use them as the flare end for my ports making them much easier to attach to my box.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture071-1.jpg
here i cut the tubing and inserted into the plugs the measure 5.52" long and have a 3" inner diameter.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture072-1.jpg
and here i sealed everything up with liquid nails for one to hold everything together and two to stop any air leaks.

Bigrick31
07-23-2007, 02:07 AM
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture073-1.jpg

2 8 ga wires for my sub just drilled a small hole stuffed the wire in and liquid nail behind them. THATS HOW I ROLL!

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture074-1.jpg
threw the box in. bolted it down wired everything up screwed in the sub then i was off to a park and ride to tune the beast! i know looks hella crappy wires hanging all over the place in all. it got dark out and couldnt really see any longer plus i got to excited to hear the darn thing! it will get cleaned up either tomorrow or Tuesday. thats how im rolling the truck to the show on Wednesday up in oregon well with my back seat in of coarse. but carpet and paint will come later. the whole box is getting carpet except for the area i fiberglassed to hold the woofer ring in that will be painted the same color of my truck.

Bigrick31
07-23-2007, 02:12 AM
.045^3ft is how much my 2 ports added together displace in case anyone wanted to know

Immacomputer
07-23-2007, 07:58 AM
I would have gone with much more port area, especially since that's not a real flare. You will probably have a good amount of port noise around tuning at full tilt.

jellyfish420

i got an electric DA FTW!!!!! the finish work will wait until after the show i have coming up. id rather roll with beat for the 10 hour drive than have a pretty box with no beat. oh and i am considering adding in another sub later on since i happen to have such a huge box. but for now i absolutely love the sq of this thing!!!

so here i took 2 pieces of 2x2x8 box tubing and welded them together to raise one side of my rear seat. i then drilled and tapped 2 1.75mm holes for my seat bracket to bolt to

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture077-1.jpg
the other side of the seat i cut off most of the bracket

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/Bigrick31/Picture078-1.jpg
here i welded a flat piece of metal to the chopped off bracket so bolt to the speaker box itself which is bolted to the floor of my cab.
