Well some of you may remembr me askng about this car before. anyhow he dropped it off earlier and i got right to work. first off i bought all the supplies i would need for now, then i started laying the tape on top of the deadening. Next i sprayed expanding foam over akward pieces so i can shape around them so there are no sharp corners.

i ****ing hate whoever owns that car. i had to settle for my rsx :( was going to drive down to SC and pick up a beast of a 300zx, 409whp@17psi :wow: , woulda cost too much to maintain and been a bit too impractical for me to own at this age..good luck though

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y272/mikey060/LayoutPlan.jpg

this is kinda how it will be. the 12" type x will be angled forward by a few degrees. it will then extend downwards and curve towards the edges. kinda like a **** lol. then the part inside of the red line will be painted black or red. and the rest will be covered by a false floor which will most likely be black carpet. gives you a general idea atleast

yea i drove this around the block. it rides very nice but i dont like the shifter/clutch as much as the skylines. perhaps that is why the manuals are very rare for this car. anyhow it is fun to drive and i do like that it is is rwd. doesnt pull as hard as the awd gtr...but still goes like stink when you want it to. all in all, vey nice:fro:

lol a rsx isnt bad, its not like your driving a ford focus or dodge neon lol. throw a turbo into the rsx, the 300zx isnt all that anymore.

in terms of performance, not rarity, i would love to own a tt 300zx, but if i had the chance, 240Z FTW

yea they are sweet. anyhow, going back to the topic on hand, i have been workng on it all morning/afternoon from about 8 to 1:30. i started out by cutting the foam which had explanded and cured over night. it gave my a nice platform to build off of. i then taped over it all, and proceded to lay the aluminum foil and lay it down aswell. then i had to drive to the city to buy fiberglass matte and another gallon of resin. here are some pics

I love 300zx's but I don't like the body kit (I don't like body kits on many cars, lip kits ftw)....that front bumper is a bit too ricer for me, but awesome car either way. I've not seen many RHD 300zx's. Look forward to seeing the build

well i got a bit of work done today. i got the wood frame mostly built. it will be glassed together to the piece that is already in the floor. it will be one piece after doing so. then there will be a second fram which the sub will be mounted in. this whole piece will be bolted down to the floor piece via 6 1/4" bolts. i know this may not be the traditional way to build a fiberglass box, but its how i want to do it. this way if he ever wanted to keep the same style box but change subs all he would need to do is have another top peice built. or perhaps if he wanted to port it, it would be much easier since the top comes off. but after reading up on the type x, its not going to be ported.

nice. i'm gonna be doing a sealed enclosure in my spare tire well in a few months. with a hatchback, would there be a noticeable sound difference with keeping the sub pointed straight up or angled like yours? i'm trying to keep mine horizontal because i'm going to put a false floor over it.

sounds good. 2 12's should get pretty loud and a hatch. im thinking this one should sound nice and get decently loud

i dont think there would be much if any difference in sound having it slightly angled. and i do plan on building a false floor as well ;)

07-13-2007, 07:24 PM
well i have been busy as hell but i managed to get some work done. i cut out the flushmount baffle for the sub a few days ago and attached it to the frame. then it got wrapped in the brightest pink fleece i could find  jk its the largest piece i had. anyhow, i then resined it and let it cure. just moments ago i did a layer of matte on the top. there will be three layers to follow asap. during this time the top will be sanded/bondoed/sanded...etc....then painted black.

well i got ntohing done....lawl jk. it now has two layers of fg matte, 2-3 layers of kitty hair, and 3 layers of filler. so its pretty smooth. the final layer was sanded with 60 then 80 followed by 100 and 120. i then primered it so i can see all the little imperections. those will be fixed tommarow. here are some pics

there are some imperfections that cant really be fixed without a whole lot of work...however at the given angle the box will be at in the car you cant see it without basically puting your head horizontal with the side of the box...so im not worried about it. also it will be painted black so that will also covered

Don't give up on the filler... how will you be finishing it (covering it?)

Invest in some RAGE Gold, it's worth it... and smoot out the entire thing...

yea it will be painted so i know it will need more filler. i have looked around for the rage gold but cant really find it...
the reason its not all being smoothed out is simply because that would be a lot of wasted effort...only 6-7 inches on the left and right will be seen. along withj 1.5-2" infront and behind the sub. the rest will be covered by a false floor

The new stuff from bondo with the blue MEKP works just as well , and sands just as easy . If I may offer a suggestion . Break out the cheese grater / body file when the filler strarts to turn rubbery. And knock down those ridges , it will save you asn arse load of time and paper :)

If it's going to be painted... keep going... and going...

Keep sanding, just block sanding as well, looks a little bit wavy to be and black will show everything, esp. with rattle cans, you can get rage from Terry's auto supply, they ship as well, rage is really good stuff (sands like chalk), you have to remember body filler is just essentially for pinholes, not to fill waves, it shouldn't exceed 1/4''. So if I were you, I would whip out the 60 grit get it all even, and keep redoing the process, also, word of advice, primer only after 220.
Also remember the guide coat, this will show you your hi and low spots

Good Luck, :)

BTW carpet will save you alot of frustration.

and yea, all the ugly **** will be covered by the beauty panel. eventually the whole hatch/ peice where the amp is mounted will be glassed together and painted to match the car when it is painted(candy orange). and it will have proffesional body work done on it by whoever paints it. i think for my first time doing a fiberglass box, let a lone a painted one it looks great.

all comments suggestions are welcomed/ appreciated. i know i have MUCH room for improvement...

phew.

and that means?

and please dont say, you should have done the whole thing....it would be a waste of time seeing how it will need to be all sanded off for when it is fused to the rest. and also, those lines that you see in the second last pic on the right side is just where i whiped it with a cloth and it didnt dry hah

haha ya, i would have liked to have just done the whole thing....but the customer grew very impatient (i put in 4-5 hours a night after an 8-9 hour shift at my full time job during the three weeks i worked on it. not every night of course(just the last 5 days)) so i just wanted to get it done...and also we had agreed that is what we were going to do and just cover it with the beauty panel. on that same note, the next time i do work like this im going to just say it will take as long as i need...not quote him a certain amount of time. the guy had the nerve to ***** to me about it taking one extra week after i put in probably 25 hours in during 5 days to get it done asap. people just dont realize the amount of time these things take.

so other than that, how does it look lol :)

i should add that only the last three pics are how it sits now. the ones before that are before i repainted it after sanding with a very high grid paper

thanks. it was my second time fiberglassing period. the first time all i did was build a ****** pair of kick panels for 6x9's in my truck. and i only used one layer on those and less than a quart of resin..so this was a slightly larger project haha. 4+ layers all over, and 2.5-2.75 quarts of resin. and then of course the 10+ layers of duraglass, bondo, etc
