*Build Log 15 cuft @ 28.5hz with 200sq.in. of port area for (2) RE MT 18's*

I started on the wall/box for the MT 18's and decided to post up a build log. I will have the box finished and a video made by this weekend.

To start off here's a sketchup video of the conept design of what the final project will eventually look like....

Took 3 sheets of MDF for this build...

Rounded Port...

It's huge 37.5" x 32.75"...
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2519/dimstg7.jpg

Decided to not use dowels, once finished I'll have front, back and side to side bracing, if thats not enough I'll install some allthread too...

The Test Fit, its upside down in this pic and and also is facing the wrong way :blackeye: ...

As of right now the box is a square, but later on down the road I will cut the rear corner and place an angled piece of mdf there to match the slope of the rear window. When this is finished I can push the box all the way back to the rear hatch/window allowing me to use my back seats.

When I cut the box corner down and angle it I will lose 2 cuft bringing the box to 13 cuft and tuning will go up to 31hz. It will be interesting to see the difference between 15cubes @ 28.5hz and 13 cubes @ 31hz.

Friday night I will finish the double baffle, finish up the bracing and then flush mount the subs.

Looks good and should be loud. I would have done window bracing in a box that big, but what you're doing should be strong enough...

Well, got the build finished and installed in my ride, but only (1) subs works :(. No worries though because the MT's were shipped to me with a free recone. Even with only one 18 working @ 2ohms and getting about 2850rms it freaking sounds amazing.

I've never attempted a recone so I'll sudy a few guides. I think nG even has one with a MT 18.

While I'm doing the recone I will drop in the other working 18 into my 18" BTL's old 7cuft @ 32hz with 100sq.in. of port enclosure and see how the MT stands up to the BTL. Even though the BTL had 3800rms on it @ 1ohm and this MT will only have 2850rms @ 2 ohm it will still be interesting to see the difference in the same box.

I will post some results.

Wow that sounds like a great test...

My prediction is the lows will be much louder on the BTL (in the same box)...do you have an SPL meter?

It would be interesting to see which 1 peaks at what frequency...

Well bad news and good news....

The bad news is that I dont have a dust cap or glue with my recone so the reconing of the blown MT 18 is going to be put off for while.

But, the good news is that I installed the other working MT 18 into the 7cuft box that I used to have my 18 fully loaded BTL in and results are very interesting...

I never metered my BTL so this isnt really a good comparison. It's just a opinion by using my hearing and feeling.

So here's what Im working with.

SUBS:
Dual 2 ohm 18" FI BTL Fully Loaded
Dual 1 ohm 18" RE Audio MT
AMP:
Rockford Fosgate t30001bd
2 ohm - 2800rms
1 ohm - 3800rms
BOX:
7 cuft tuned to 32hz with 100sq.in. of port.

MT PROS:
The MT hits the lows extremly well, much better then the BTL ever did. It gets loud and my blazer flex's more on a few songs because the lows are hitting with much more authority. 30-35hz is amazing!
MT CONS:
Even with the sub wired at 2ohm getting 2800rms it doesnt seem to handle the power near as weel as the Fully Loaded BTL did. On 40hz burps it doesnt seem like it has the SPL potential like the BTL did even if I was to feed it more power.

BTL PROS:
It's alot louder then the MT, loud enough to cause pain in the ears when burping at 40hz. It handles the power much better. Very loud 35-40hz range.
BTL CONS:
Doesn't hit the lows as well as the MT.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

I'll make some vids of the Blazer parked in the same location that I used for the vids of the BTL. The location of the"Building Flex" and "Effects of BTL on Gas Stations" vids that I made are all very close to me. It's not gonna be that noticable of a difference but will still be kinda cool to see what happens :D

Wow that's a great test...

Kind of opposite of what I was thinking...I have an 18" MT...but I've never heard an 18" BTL....

So you don't have any SPL meter? It doesn't need to be a TL...

As long as the meter is consistent you can use it to see the difference between the 2 setups :)

Thanks again!

That would be a great idea, but the BTL was sold.

The MT actually has close to the same amount of excursion as the BTL. It moves alot, my rear window is popping out further then usual too.

I listened to the MT for about 4 hours yesterday and it's very impressive, much more then day 1 of testing. The lows are just sick on it! Way more vehicle flex is going on which isnt neccisarly a good thing, but it's flexxing more because the lows are hitting soo much better.

I drove to the local audio express to see if they had a extra remote laying around for my Pioneer 6800 because the volume knob broke off. They hooked it up with a remote for free then asked me what I was running because they told me I was flexing the windows and roof panels of the store like crazy when I pulled up to the front.

They heard it and couldn't believe it. During the test a installer came from out back and listened to it. He said it was louder then the managers system which is (6) RF T1 12's. So to say the least these audio express noobs where very impressed with the RE MT 18 on 2800rms in 7cuft @ 32hz with 100sq.in. of port.

I'll make a vid this weekend to show you what im talking about.

*edit* Oh BTW, Im going to try to recone the other MT 18 this weekend so hopefully I'll have both of them up and running in the 15cuft wall :D

Thats a 10" L7 it's 2.5 cubes @ 28hz T-Line with 35sq.in. of port area, it's made for a hometheater setup. It sounds very good and hits the lows nicely, but doesnt get that loud, it gets 250rms from a plate amp.

The box on top of the 15cuft Dual 18 enclosure is a prefab Dual 12" subzone that was givin to me by a friend, it's 5 cuft @ 30hz. I've tested it with some type R's and it wasnt very impressive of a box. Kinda ****** actually. The glossy black 5 cuft @ 34hz with 84sq.in of port that I sold which had the R's in it was way way better in output and sq.

The box on the far right is for a single 15" it's 4 cuft @ 37hz with 70sq.in of port area. with double baffle.

I've also got (2) JL 10 W3's in 2.5 cubes @ 30hz with 40 sq.in. of port area(not pictured), it's used in my computer sound systems setup. It gets 150rms from a plate amp and sounds very good for fps gaming and listing to music. Very good SQ with the JL's.

07/05/07 update:

Still havn't recieved a dust cap or glue for the reconing of the blown RE MT so the wall is not in right now. BUT the other working RE MT is still installed in the 7cuft box and WOW it gets better every day!

Im totally impressed with the RE MT sound quality and ability to hit the really low notes with such strength. I was drving around the other night testing out 20 new chopped & screwd up songs that I just downloaded and couldnt beleve the output that I was getting. I was told these MT's that I bought were freshly reconed and only had a few burbs on them. I guess this MT is breaking in because day by day its getting much better.

I pulled up to the gas station thats closed at night time and did a few tests. Leather so Soft by Lil Wayne chopped up actually made a pump fall from its holder.

I'll get vids this weekend.

SHiZNiLTi
07-05-2007, 05:36 PM
I have the sub and port facing forward. To the ear it sounds the best this way after testing all other methods of box placement. If I face it to the rear hatch the rear window will pop out too much and cause an anoying noise. Less window flex noise = better bass experiance :D If I face tghe bos to the rear and stick my head up by the dash on the front windshield its hella loud. But for daily driving sub & port facing forward FTW.

How does it sound facing up?

I've tried facing to the front in my SUV and there was too much cancellation...it was noticeably quieter and my meter confirmed it...

When I tried sub and port up it didnt work out too well because it was 3-5" from the roof. Facing sub and port forward in a 2dr blazer is teh best bet for sq IMO. It's ok if I lose a little bit of output on the meter, its worth it to not have rear window hatch flex noise..... I mean come on its a 18" sub getting hella power in a big *** box :D For daily driving this is what works out the best for me.

The 15 cuft enclosure is complete for the 18's, it fits in the blazer and the frame to wall it off is pretty much done. The only thing that is left is to get a dust cap and some glue so I can complete the recone of the other RE MT 18. Im meeting with a local subguru that has some dustcaps laying around and glue. Once I get that it will be finished.

Thanks Mark! Your awesome :veryhapp: I really appreciate you taking the time in helping me out with getting the MT reconed with Ficaraudio.com's help.

I'll come by this weekend to pick it up,

Unfortunately while you were out getting the other MT reconed for me something really bad happened last night............. The current MT 18 that I've been using in the 7cuft box over this past month just took a crap one me, :pissed: I havn't pulled it out yet, but I know it's bad because it's not reading 2ohm's with the DMM. So now I'm back to only (1) working sub again, once I pick it up from you this weekend.

The original person I bought them from was right when he said that "these (2) 18's will probably need to be reconed, because they were being burped with 10k watts" I just spoke with him the other day and the recones are for sure going to be shipped and will arrive here next week.

Mark, when the recone comes in we should meet up and recone the newly blown MT so I can get this project completed and make some vid's and attend some shows.

Yep it sux Skip01, I was soo close to having both of the subs installed in the giant 15cuft box this weekend and now I'm kicking myself for pushing that single 18 too hard and I'm back to only (1) sub again.

I guess it was kinda good in a way though that it blew now and not later because it would have suked to take that 15cuft box/wall out when installed and braced into the blazer. Hopefully the guy that I originally bought the subs from a few months ago comes through with the recones soon, I have a feeling next weekend this project will be 100% complete.

i dunno. big box = big flex.

otherwise, nuts.

I've still been using just (1) 18 RE MT in 7cuft w/ 100sq.in. of port and I've got to say its hella loud!

I can't wait either to get this 2nd MT reconed and get the wall finished, I'll recone it this weekend.
