View Full Version : box worklog

i'm starting a box in an extended cab chevy. the bottom will be fiberglass, w/ the top sides and front being wood. it will house 2 re 8's, ported around 30-35hz. if i have enough room i'm gonna sink the amp into the top. so far all i have is 2 layers of glass on the floor...

You will add more layers on floor right? Because 2 layers isn't enough IMHO.
Don't forget update this worklog. This should be interesting. ;)

06-26-2007, 10:21 PM
ya, probably 2 more layers on the floor. i drilled 2 holes in it today...where the jack is there is 2 holes through to the bottom of the truck. i'm glassing 2 bolts through the bottom so when i'm done you can bolt it in from under the truck. ya i'll update it every day i have pics. i didn't do anything today but drill 2 holes. i was working on my doors today. this isn't my first glass job;)

Moar, looking good so far.

Something I tried, and it seemed to come out good (structure wise)...instead of duraglass to seal, I stuffed some fiberglass that I pulled apart from matt, and soaked it with resin to fill in the cracks between the mdf and glass. If you soak it good enough it seals well and is strong.

07-05-2007, 11:39 PM
i got liquid nails to seal/hold the wood down. then i duraglassed over everything. its pretty strong.

07-06-2007, 12:48 AM
looking really good! keep up the work!

i do what i can:fro:

the best part is...i work in a tire shop. the only wood/glass/body tools in the shop are mine...and somehow, i have an entire bay all to myself for boxes and such.

you will see ZERO wiring, when i'm done, its gonna be completly stealth...except the red led's ;)

Looks real nice man, Ill probablly be following the same thing this weekend, got the same dip in the middle under my rear seat.

But is it bad for the sub to firing upward? Im probablly mistaken here, but for some reason I remember hearing it was bad for it.

bad for it...naw. not the best sound...maybe. i've heard down firing in a truck sounds better, but i've got these firing up port forward.

07-10-2007, 11:27 PM
Im just trying to decide if I should have these Assasins firing up down or forward in my wee sealed box lol. But how many layers did you end up having on the bottom there?

07-11-2007, 12:09 AM
i ended up doing 5 layers, 4 in the amp section

07-11-2007, 12:29 AM
Do you know how many gallons you used? And roughly how much you spent on the fiber glass, if you don't mind my asking that is.

07-11-2007, 12:33 AM
little over a gallon. cost me 21/gal.

07-11-2007, 01:10 AM
Not too shabby. I guess I will be hittin up home depot this weekend lol.

i sent the kid to radio shack to get the leds, and when he came back he told me there was a guy there that was pretty knowledgeable about car stereos, and when i get done he should bring it down there to show him. he was telling me that the guy had 2 12s and 2 15s in his truck. i said "oh hell no, this guy don't know about car stereos" and his reply was..."yeah he does, he has these special square kicker subs, that are specially designed to only produce pressure in a straight line, thats why his box was only as big as the sub. it doesn't have to be that wide, cause there's not gonna be any pressure there anyway.

i said...don't ever go there again.

07-11-2007, 10:04 PM
ready for pics???
after i painted the red centers, i decided to 'dust' the entire box w/ the red. turned out REAL nice :) i should have an installed pic tommorow night :)
