I actually just got back, I picked up a Phillips 42" w/ Ambilight. I looked around at several places (bestbuy, Circuit City, Local place called wrights sound gallery, SAMS, and I went to walmart to check to see if they had some deals.

Well I ended up at bestbuy...and out of all the TVs I looked at this one impressed me the most. Out of the ones in my price range...and hell I didnt know it had ambilight till after I made the decision to buy it...so that was great.

I think I've cought the HT/Home Audio bug now. Im starting a small build tomorrow will have some pictures. Going to be building the new Project on Parts express (TriTrax) but with better drivers.

So let me know what you have, and if the TV I bought is decent...in my eyes it was the best I saw. So hopefully i will be satisfied :)

A Sony XBR3. My parents have had it for probably 3-4 months now. It's simply amazing on HD channels, I've never seen such an awesome picture. I never had the pleasure of viewing blu-ray or HD-dvds but they are said to be quite impressive.

edit...I'm pretty sure this is the exact model.

it's something that Philips introduced in newer model tvs. Doesn't it just basically mean there isn't a certain amount of light being shown in just one part of the screen, it's kind of divided up equally?

Ok let me explain Ambilight.

The TV has a few rows of LED lights on the back side of it...Wall side. And say you are watching Discovery HD Theater and its about Ocean life....well when the screen is lit up blue for the ocean those LED's light up blue...illuminating the wall behind the TV. Its pretty neat. I don't have HD service yet...Ive got the Direct TV HD box sitting right here, just have to call them to get it hooked up.

Pictures shall come tomorrow. And some of you guys have nice looking setups :)

Well you guys spend 2-4 grand on a tv but dont want to spend $300 on a high def player that just doesn't make sense.

kind of like buying some b&w 804s and hooking it up to a $100 home theater in a box receiver.

It will be a long time before a winner is declared, if ever...

Now going back to being serious I understand that it would seem stupid but he just likes to buy things whenever they are a little cheaper. He doesn't buy everything all at once he likes to save and then buy items.

It makes plenty of sense actually. They just invested 2-4 grand on a standard they are fairly certain will stick around for the foreseeable future. If all goes well, there should be no reason to replace it for quite a while. However, unless players go dual format... they will certainly be boned one way or another by the format wars. I can see not wanting to spend a minimum of 300 dollars each on a dvd player for both formats. Hell, maybe they just dont watch movies very often?

Just because someone sees something in a different light than you do, doesn't mean their logic is flawed.

Just an FYI, but you can NOT judge a TV by the picture you see in the store. NONE of them have been calibrated, so you're only seeing the "out of box" settings. With calibrating one of the other TV's might actually look the best.

I'm saying that in general, not about the specific one you bought as I'm not familiar with it.

Go to avsforum and search for your TV and see what the feedback is on it. Might also have calibrating tips, etc...

With all that said, as long as YOU enjoy watching it that's all that really matters.

I bought a 32" HD TUBE TV a few months back. I still think the good old tube has the BEST picture going. And it's only a bedroom TV.

The HDTV would be more than worth it with DiscoveryHD. Some of the shows on there are nothing short of breath taking. Console games all run at least 480p now, so you have that too.

After playing Gears on an HDTV, and wanting to see Forza2 in HD...Ive decided to get one. Some of you have very clean set-ups. Delvryboy, where did you get the stands?

What the hell does a line conditioner do? And what difference does a surge protector make, if it's "made" for something else?

It wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular, sorry for quoting you though. Just saying its pretty sad when I walk into a friends house and he has his 3 grand tv hooked up to a vcr only, and a cheap old antenna or another friend who is to cheap to buy an hdmi cable for his ps3. I bet their not the only ones doing this...

I worded it wrong, I should of put HD SOURCE. Not necessarily a player but at least high def cable.

fyi theirs already dual format players with more coming from onkyo, and possibly samsung. all cause one format loses doesnt mean your software will just stop working and same with the player.

**** dude that's a lot of mullah for a remote. It looks cool though. The logitech 880 is the remote I wanted for a long time, does it break that easily?

I have read that others have had the same problem's, and it does feel flimsy... I have dropped it a couple of time from about 2 feet high onto the carpet. but the good thing is that the buttons are like blocks so they go right back on but need glue i gues i just went crazy on the glue. and anyways i hate needing to point the remote at teh stuff all the time and sometimes certain things dont get the signal.

I am still unsure on the tower/amp combo though. either a classe amp and some b&w 703's. or just hold off on the amp and buy the 803s and then buy a classe amp. Still unsure. but this time I am taking my time. So many things i want but so little money :( i want a 1080p projector and the new denon 4308 thats coming out.

I know that the picture quality in big box stores is horrible. They have 1 or 2 cable feeds to supply a few hundred TV's. And none of them have been calibrated properly. HENCE the reason I tried to mainly only look at TVs that were being fed with a single source (such as a single Blu-Ray player or HD-DVD player. I also went to a local shop that has rediculous prices, but they also have every TV set up correctly, and have MANY viewing rooms with single TV's.

A surge protector will keep harmfull current from going back and zapping your expensive HDTV when lightning hits the dish, someone topples a pole, surge comes through your power-line, etc...

Line conditioning will help giving your HDTV nice clean power without spikes up and down for a better picture and should make your set last longer, especially the light source. Some people using a good line conditioner actually say they have seen a difference in picture quality.

My bad intercoole. I misread the power surge thing, and thought you said speific ones for HDTVS..as if it would do something else.

I would do a surge protector at least, but line conditioners seem a little unnecessary. Plenty of electronics work fine after years of unconditioned power.

delvryboy...guitar stands?

Intercooler
06-18-2007, 09:24 PM
They do work just fine. If you are ever on the AVS forum though they go into like crazy! I see many of things they talk about for the weakness of each HDTV... My Samsung has the clouding and my Polaroid has banding... but neither one bother me while I am watching something so I don't care. They use the line conditioners because they say it makes a difference in the picture plus makes the light source last longer. FWIW I am not doing line conditioning myself. I have HDTV surge protectors on both.
