These are some computer speakers I just started working on to send with my gf this summer to Spain. I'm using some 1" "full range" Tangband speakers from PE. I have yet to test them so I don't really know how they'll sound. They're going to be powered by one or two of these (http://www.apexjr.com/JBL12.htm) JBL 12 watt amplifiers. I may redo them before she leaves but I'm liking how they've turn out sofar. Working with such tiny cuts is really a pita.

The amp box(es) will probably be mdf too, maybe with an acryllic or aluminum face panel for any switches/dials/in/outputs. I'm not really sure how I want to paint these.

3/4" was all I had laying around. Haven't used anything else since my first box. The volume is probably a little more than 2.6in^3. I've never really done anything this small... so hopefully they'll sound decent. It's kinda fun working on such a small scale, though.

hempy

I wish I knew how they sound, but I'm still waiting on the amp(s) and don't have any stereos small enough that I'd feel safe powering them. I did have a cannibalized cheapo computer speaker amp to test them but I would up blowing the The amps are on their way from ApexJR (http://www.apexjr.com/JBL12.htm). Hopefully it'll be enough power, but I may just wind up going with the $30 PE t-amp the next time I order stuff from them.

Cat was in process of opening sliding door. Pic wound up in my photobucket and I figured I'd add it.

hempy
05-09-2007, 08:09 PM
Dunno... I think they left today w/ USPS.

I am wondering, however, if you can wire full range speakers in parallel for a lower impedance. I'm not really worried about stereo separation, but not sure what kind signal I'll be sending to them. I don't want both playing just the right or left channel.

These required about 0 planning. So that never really crossed my mind.

The amps got here today suprisingly. I got the two sides cut for the amp box. I'm kind of worried about heat but I'll see how it goes. The front and back are going to be made from some 1/8" lexan that I have. If I can find a good voltage source I'll light it up with leds.

The right output is in the little white plug, so I'm going to (hopefully) glue this cannibalized 3.5mm plug in the empty space.

I think I'm going to paint them blue... it's how I've been seeing them in my head for a while.

A lot more than I planned. Lets hope it's worth it.

Speakers 2x $10
Amps 2x $10 (he had a min. $20 order so I ordered 2)
3.5mm cables $5
Screws, etc $3
Wood, plexi, paint Free

So yeah... but whatever.

Well, the amp box shell got built today. Did some of the roundovers (except for the angle pieces) and cleaned it up a bit. Board and heatsink fit great. Now to find a way to get the plexi cut/cleaned up in a presentable fashion. Anyone ever cut plexiglass? I also need to find knobs.

I couldn't really flushmount as I don't have a router bit to use with a stencil nor have I ever made a stencil for custom cutouts.

if i were to ask you to build me the same exact thing....how much would you charge?

I have considered this because of the extra amp, but I'm not really sure as far as pricing. Materials obviously, but I'd have to figure everything else out after this set is complete. I still don't really even know if they'll sound good, as them amp may not be powerful enough at 8 ohms.

Ultimately I still need to finish them to figure out if they're really worth the expense/time. I think if they do well, I'll begin another identical build/log and see how they progress. If they're as good, I'll sell them. But so far I'm just kind of making things up as I go along. Plus I'm not sure if my handiwork is up to "selling standards" yet.

Not yet, since I don't know the pinout for the 3.5mm outputs. I'm waiting on a 12ft 3.5mm cable. Each speaker will have a 6ft run w/ male 3.5mm plug.

Anyone know of any (low cost) cnc/milling companies online? I'm second guessing my ability to make the plexiglass presentable.

Well, I reached a stopping point on the face/back. The screw holes came out really good, but I'm not really happy with the back. I would feel the same about the front, but as of now all of my cuts are covered up. I may try to find someone with a small cnc machine since companies charge way too much for custom fabrication. I countersunk the holes and cleaned up the cutouts up to 1500 grit.

My PE order shipped today so the cables should be in sometime this week. In the meantime I will be getting them ready for paint. Cleaning up the sides cut away a good bit of the roundover again, so I may pass over it with the router again or I may just hand snad. There are some spots that could use some bondo as well.

I am having trouble trying to figure out the polarity of the outputs on the amp. I have one that is wired to a 3.5mm plug and another that is just a 2-prong plug. I need to find out, first, how which is which on the plug, and secondly, how the left output is wired to the 3.5 plug (tip, middle, sleeve) so I can wire up the right 3.5 plug that I added. Is there any way to do this with a dmm or a pair of other speakers? Is there a way to create a file of a one-way "pop" so that I can maybe check the phase?

Oh well, time will tell. Here are new pix. I testfit everything and it all seems to fit well.

I went with these because they were the ones she wanted. She thought they were cute. I guess I can't blame her, as they've gotten that very reaction from about two dozen people by now.

I feel compelled to try and come up with some tiny desktop horns for them.

I feel compelled to try and come up with some tiny desktop horns for them.Ahh that makes sense, 3s are cute too though :D I have three inch Auras in half wave tapered pipes and they are VERY nice, with solid output down to around 60-70, and audible down to 50hz take up little space too...Sealed many three inch drivers can go down to 80-100 hz with ease and blend well with subwoofers...

They may have too high of FS and low x max to work well in horn. Not an expert in BLH's but output would most likely be unusable as the driver would distort even with minimal power input with almost no throw. Also BLH's, and most other horns work best against a wall or ideally in a corner on the floor...

I think they're finally ready for paint... I bondoed all the imperfections, hopefully no new ones will show up after priming.

I also got the extra 3.5mm plug wired up, and I found a 9v source on the on/off switch to run a power led. I was going to try an bypass the 6-pin switch with a simpler 2-pin pushbutton, but I found a "cap" for it that I can use.

I still haven't heard them yet though! I'm getting anxious. Still waiting on the headphone cables for the speakers.

Pics may be kinda dark...but I figured I'd post em just to show how good they looked while being so bad.

Well, it's been a while, but they've finally been painted. I haven't seen them, so I hope they look good; I'm going to go pick them up tomorrow. They wanted to know what color, and I just pointed at a random blue Sentra. I think it's called onyx blue.

I really just hope they look good...the paint is the thinnest part and usually shows lots of imperfections once the clear is down. I had to sit with them, a can of filler primer, and some really high grit sandpaper for about a week already.

Pics to come tomorrow. Or not at all. Who knows....

hempy
07-31-2007, 09:31 PM
Ok, so these things look hot as ****. I don't really care about any imperfections, because the paint just looks ******. I'm not sure if it's the same paint I picked out, as it looks much darker, but I don't really care at this point. I only have one of the speaker pods and the amp box at the moment, as one has a big bubble on th efront from the way he had to hold them to paint, so that'll be knocked down and recleared tomorrow.

But I like them. A lot. I think the blue will match the silver cones really well, as well as the plexi on the amp.

But enough of that... onto pics!

After several weeks of laziness, I finally picked this project back up. I testfit, wired one side up (other enclosure is being recleared), fixed my add-on 3.5mm plug, and tried to match the polarity/phase. Just one sounds pretty good. I tested it on my tv which has really low level audio output, so hopefully my computer will have a stronger output.

I think I'm going to use some deadener inside, then felt, then stuff loosely with poly-fil. I lost the rubber feet that I had so I replaced them with some from wallyworld.

The price of the Munnies was what shied me away from using them. I wish we had local stores that carry stuff like that around here.

PE sells three or four different version of those 2". Dunno why exactly...

The amp will probably wind up being the expensive/interesting part. I think he used his sound card for the output, but you can go with a t-amp, the jbl12, or various chip amp kits.

Finally done. The left box had to be reshot since when cutting down the drip in the clearcoat, it ran into the primer. The paint is a little off as it was a different paint that was tinted to match. The left wound up being slightly darker, but it's hard to tell and I like them a lot anyway. They sound really nice too for being such small drivers and the having done absolutely no math/research before building the enclosures.

I've read reviews from people using 3" drivers with the t-amps with good results. I actually just ordered a set of the 3" neo fullrange buyout drivers from PE for a second set. (debadged aura ns3's) I'd go with the 3" if you have the space.

As far as this set goes, they sound good a lower volumes, and with the bass on the amp all the way up, it provides good midbass without distortion. I'm sure a small sub would pick up the lower frequencies and blend well. Once the volume is turned up past 1/3 or 1/2 way, distortion is quite evident, and the bass needs to be turned down about halfway. They can get quite loud with the bass down and sound pretty good for their size. For normal listening volumes the combo is great, and certainly satisfies my needs. Once I can start playing around with the new drivers I can determine whether it's the drivers or the amp that's causing the distortion.

No clue. I didn't really do any research/modeling beforehand with these and I probably won't with the next set. I'm guessing they'll be about 4" inside. (I think I saw that somewhere on one of the PE reviews.)

I've seen those Tangband drivers in several nice horn-loaded and t-line enclosures as well.

Close. They're buyout full range neo's from PE. They'll be going into a second set. Probably will wind up as a present for someone.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c21/hempness/0039.jpg

The terminals on the **** things are reeeally in the way of mounting... plus the flange has a gap, so mounting them on the front would probably result in ugly puckering in the metal around the screw. So I'm thinking about mounting these inside the enclosure from behind (maybe rabbeted 3/8") then wiring, run the wire through the back panel, line, stuff, and then attach the back. Then finish with the driver masked...hopefully avoiding damage.

http://www.41hz.com/ has a kit that runs 25x2. The amp kit itself costs about 40 dollars, then you need the power supply kit which is like another 40 or you could use something like a laptop power brick.

I decided to skip sending these to the shop to get primed, since that was usually the step that took the most time to get done, so I picked up some filler primer and went to work. The blue painter's tape wasn't staying in place enough to protect the drivers, so I switched to the green 3m automotive masking tape. Wehn taking it off today to check the coverage, I noticed that the glue stuck to the surround basically anywhere it was attached. I'm going to try some thinner or alcohol or acryli-clean to try and clean them up, as well as any unmasked spots.

I also just powered these up for the first time today, and all i can say is wow. I wish I had bought more of these things. The bass is much more prominent than in the little 1 inchers, and I can even coax a 50hz tone out of them at higher volumes before breaking up.

They're basically debadged Aura NS3s. They were a buyout on PartsExpress. Now I'm desperately looking for more, since the actual black ns3s are 20 bucks apiece.

I actually just picked up a new toy that should put out enough power to get some movement out of them.

It's a discontinued wireless speaker receiver/amplifier from Ratshack. I hope to use the amp board without the wireless features to get it into a smaller case. I got it for 15 bucks. The guy at RS was kinda suprised since they apparently started out at $150.

I finally found a leftover power supply cable, so I wired them up to my Vifa pipes.

These things are definitely packing a punch. My living room is only like 13x11, but they were definitely very loud. Sounded fine too to my indiscriminating ears. I think I'm going to go and find the rest in my district. Also going to get some through a groupbuy somewhere else.

I can only imagine what the little neo's would be like with it.

I may try and get 5 or six of these. If I can come up with a practical, smaller, and aesthetically pleasing case for these (like the ones I've made before), would anyone be interested?

It's the 5.25. If it was for me, I'd be totally disappointed by its performance in its box, but it's for the gf, so she doesn't seem to care.

I did get to play around with it on about 600w, and the box seemed to keep the driver from destroying itself. Coil seems fine too, still nice and copper...y.

I think it'll do its job well though.

So while working on other projects, I decided to pick this one back up and finish it. I remade the amp box, with a bit of a twist this time. I used 1/2" mdf, with the same 1" roundover bit, giving it a pretty unique look. I don't have room to mount the plexiglass to the face of the box, so I'm going to have it float in the opening, attached to the circuit board and heatsink instead. I think I'm going to paint them a glossy super white.

And I think I've been shopping too much at Ikea lately and it's starting to show in my work....
