I heard about but never seen anyone try stuffing their box with cotton like material to increase sound.

It will generally flatten the sound and reduce peakiness. This will usually mean that you will lose SPL.

It could increase sound out put. General use it to make the sub think it has more air space than it really does, if you have to use a small enclosure, flatten response. It will help with sound. Not so sure it will make a huge audible difference(as in louder) if thats what you are asking.
Guess me and Immacomputer where typing at the same time.

well i have i have a 15 and when i put a good bit of power on it it dosent perform well in box and just pushes out a lot of air through vent, tried a different 15 ad got same results. so would filling the box change that?

1.75 is WAY too small for a 15" ported box.....You need to up it to like 3.0-3.5 or so at the least...

I don't want to steal your thread 'tru 44' but lets say you put 1/2 inch sheets of poly fill around the walls of the box, will that give you a smoother sound in a ported box?

Generally speaking, yes.
