hey there everyone.

another thread. another ib install. a new car :)

equipment to be utilizied.

Alpine CDA-9856
Alpine PXA-H701 (comming soon)
Alpine RUX-C701 (comming soon)
DLS A5
DLS A2 (comming soon)
Image Dynamics CD2-Comp HLCD mini lens (lens comming soon, fullbodies too big)
Image Dynamics CX62 6.5 midbass IB in doors (installed)
Image Dynamics IDQ15d2v2 IB (installing now)

now, the install is in its infancy, and pics will come as i update the thread. my tax retun should be comming soon and the H701\C701 or a H700 combo will be purchased with it. the DLS A2 will come after i scrounge up enough monies because that next 2 channel amp will suffice for the time being.

im installing the subs in the "rear deck" of the cargo area in the GTi. its that panel that lifts up when the hatch opens. im going to make a new panel, and reinforce it and seal off the stowage space as best i can.

so heres some pictures. ill take more of the fabrication process for the baffle. its drying right now.

http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/6923/img0006kk5.jpg
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/5734/img0007fo1.jpg

i have a video, id of taken more pictures but my camrea just died because my roomate left the somva***** on after he downloaded all his pics. so i gotta charge new batteries.

should be a fun install. maybe ill draw some sketches. or something.

i plan on making a false floor for the amps to sit under and making it nice and neat. should be easy to make and not take a long time. look for updates in the next few days.

if done right with those subs in that car, your bass will be effortless and bottomless.

1. gotta seperate the front wave from the back completely.dynamatt, expanding foam, fibreglass anything, just make sure the waves are completely seperated.

2. rigidity, everythings gotta be solid, real solid, any flex or wobble or movement will take away from the potentially mystical bass.

im guessing your gonna do a great job, and i have $50 sais its the best bass you'll have ever heard in any car anywhere ever.

:)

ive had the idq's in IB in a previous car with the trunk completly sealed off.

so i know the 'sexytime mystical bass'

it will be good? verynicea. http://forums.bit-tech.net/images/smilies/bit-thumbsup.gif

so hopefully i can score some MDF and have it ripped and then cut it to shape with my jigsaw. resin the inside, and lay the mdf inside the bottom of this mould. then when it dries cut out my baffles. get the second baffle to shape, outline the cutouts and flushbaffle the sucker. i have a cool little idea. hopefully it works out ;)

What is the volume of your area behind the baffle? Just looked it up and saw that the Vas on those subs is 9.45 ft3 a piece.

Installation looks great so far.

req
04-01-2007, 03:15 PM
actually im not quite sure on the air volume. :)

just putting them in the largest enclosure i can manifest practically. i seriously didnt realize (until i just looked as well) that true infinite baffle for these should be 20+ cubes lol.

ill have to get the tape measure out and do some math.

audiolife
04-01-2007, 03:27 PM
if you have gortex and have a place to drill out a couple 4" holes you can add more "volume" without hurting the car

60ndown
04-01-2007, 03:36 PM
i hope th subs r being mounted descretely under the baffle.

bangandow
04-01-2007, 04:39 PM
Aww man... you're giving me all kinds of dangerous ideas :) I take it this same concept would translate pretty well to a wagon? Basically make an MDF baffle to cover the whole rear cargo area... make sure you have a good seal along the sides, the rear gate, and the back seats and you're good to go?

I'm thinking this would let me get the kind of clean sub-bass I'm looking for without sacrificing cargo area... cause you can still store stuff below the baffle, right? It'll just compromise the volume temporarily...

If you made something like this aperiodic, would you have to vent outside of the car, or could you put a vent in the baffle itself and utilize the remaining volume in the cabin?

audiolife
04-01-2007, 04:54 PM
just build a membrane baffle behind the subs or go more extravagant like you were saying or build the membrane in front of the sub....

bangandow
04-01-2007, 05:11 PM
Membrane...? I don't follow.

i might do that dave. but if i do, ill do it after i try it the way it is first.

in the tirewell, it drops down a solid 8" or so, i could cut the wall out of the tire well pretty large facing the rear of the vehicle, and make an aluminum panel and rivet it in place or something, and seal with the gortex.

maybe. ill see about it later :p:

it rained all day today, so i couldnt get any works done. :(

hopefully more this week

i hope th subs r being mounted descretely under the baffle.

im going to fill the edges with kittyhair to make it real solid. i plan on putting a bunch of drywall screws horizontal in those pockets to make for some nice reinforcement.

i guess im only going to do 2 layers of baffle, its already heavy as hell. so im getting close. just gotta let the resin dry and trim the edges up nice. do a little bondo work and sand it all down. its comming along quite nicely :)

filled up round the sides. i ran out of filler, i needed like 1 more ounce lol.

its strong as hell. weighs like 40-50 pounds. should be nice. i have a few fitment issues to address with the edges filled that i need to sand back, but otherwise its comming along. lots of sanding i know, but kittyhair is a ***** in that respect.

other than those minor details (again, usually a problem when filling weird areas) things are rolling smoothly.

did some better wiring. gotta fix a few things up and rerun rca\remote. and i aslo have to get my H701 in the mail and replace the crossfire 5 way xover. but it aint too bad. not the final install. but better than wires hangin all over the place ;)
http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/3631/img0092ty2.jpg

dont mind the extra wire, didnt want to cut up my wire until i install the h701 and everything. im going to make the RCA's custom length and resolder them all once the processor gets in the car. but for now i just coiled em up so i dont waste my wire.

gonna end up cuttin the top out to have the amps show through the wood. may use plexi to cover em up. but for now its nice to have a good place to put the groceries lol.

your doing nice work no doubt,

but,

ive done IB before and i can see a problem with what your doing.

useing foam strips between your beautiful new shelf and your origional vw plastic shelf supports and the rear seats wont work well,

because,

when you get any kind of serious volume going you will start to move serious air, that air will force its way to wherever it wants to go, anyway it can, any how, by any means,

= complete loss of sq and SPL.

you install will sound absolutely beautiful up to about (im guessing here) 110 db after that volume the air WILL do what its best at.......... escape.

if i am misunerstanding your pictures then ignore this post,

but if im right, and you want the sq only an IB install can provide, AND, some good spl,

YOU HAVE TO SEAL EVERYTHING AND SECURE EVERYTHING TO EVERYTHING COMPLETELY.

NO EXCEPTIONS.

or air will escape and you will be bitterly dissapointed about the amount of time and love you put into this install.

i have $100 here, sais a single 10" sub in a sealed box will actually be more satisfying overall than what your doing if you dont seal the chite outta everything :suicide:

but if you got all these points coverd 'fugedabawdit'

req
04-20-2007, 03:41 PM
ive got some more work to seal it all up no doubt.

but it will be sealed up quite nicely. i can assure you of that :)

thanks for the tips, i am not planning on any kind of SPL you know. i usually listen at moderate levels so its not a huge problem, but im gonna seal it up tight lol.

i seriously might cut a hole in the bed and make it sort of an water tight gortex membrane to help vent the air and loosen up some of that pressure. so that will prolly work out a bit.

its sealed up like a *****. its a nice tight squeez. the only place that air comes out is a tiny gap at the top where the seats come together, i can only fit my pinky finger down in there. very small gap. and then in the back where the tailgate meets the box is nice and tight, but there are vents in the plastic of the tailgate that i need to fill with some sort of foam. ill take it off in the next few days and plug that up.

otherwise its nice. not as loud as my sealed box, but i knew that would be the case. but they are real smooth, and play down real low. now i just need to get CD2MH lenses so i can have a finished system... sigh. next 2 weeks i guess.

Thats not IB, but rather a mid sized sealed enclosure.

True IB requires 10x the Vas (IDQ15 D4 Vas=9.09 feet), 9.09 x 2 (2 drivers) x 10 (10 x vas) = 181.8 cubic feet!

The minimum requirement for IB is 4x the Vas, it wont give you true IB performance but its better than a sealed enclosure. 9.09(2)(4)=72.72 cubic feet

The amount of space you have available doesnt come close to that requirement:(

i know its not a true ib setup, but i may cut a hole in the bed somewhere and cover it with goretex to make it vent outside like a hybrid AP\IB setup.

but it gets the woofers lots of efficency. that being said, there arent many cars out there that have 'true ib' setups then huh? :suave:

i dont know. if your definition of loud is like me. then no. they should do like mid 30's. maybe low 40's. but they are serious low end monsters. and the get loud enough to blend with my front stage. its kinda hard to understand unless you listen to it ;)

I'm late... but how did you match up where the baffle meets the rear hatch, and the seat before you carpeted it?

nG

i used the stock panel to make a template of the hatch area. see first few pages. and then i bult up on it knowing it would be a tight squeeze. then when the mould was drying, i put it in the car and the back panel pushed it in a little bit making it conform even more. its REAL tight.

It's already done now, but it you wanted a LITERALLY tight a fit as possible.

Tape off the hatch with 2" masking tape, as well as back seat. (Where the baffle meets up).

Place un carpeted baffle in place, and use bondo to form the edges to the panel even better than when you fiberglassed. Take off, sand.

Then, I'd personally recommend a vinyl, allante vinyl. Something to match your interior.

Looks solid Andy.

Jon

James Bang

the processor has time-correction, EQ, phase, x-over, and other multi-channel 5.1 settings. The controller is needed to adjust any of the settings on the processor, unless you have an Alpine HU control the processor.

as stated, its an active 5 way crossover, 6 channel 1\3 octave eq, dolby 5.1 decoder, 6 channel time alignment and some other crap :p:

channel 1 (output 1\2 for highs) = front 1
channel 2 (output 2\3 for mids) = front 2
channel 3 (output 3\4 for rears im not using) = rear
channel 4 = center\sub
channel 5 = sub (bridge 4\5 with the controller)

so its real REAL versatile. you just need a double din or some other place to mount the thing because it is the volume controll and everything. real easy to use once you get used to it. you can eather set EACH SPEAKER's eq\xover\time align... or you can set each channel (output 1, output 2 ect) together each pair of speakers have the same settings. theres a bunch of 'save spots' (1-0 buttons) so you can have an eq\xover\time align to suit different music and so on.

and it looks super ****. :)

alarm is in the works. fixing car, getting new tires, new horn bodies, alarm.

sigh. i need monies. :p:

Hey Req,

I was thinking of getting a GTI soon, and was hesitant considering my subwoofers in a hatchback vehicle is not the best idea. How does the hatch door on those VW's hold up? Did you deaden anything or what not?

Owning a truck right now, it's nice not to have anything flex/rattle besides the doors.

req
04-29-2007, 01:29 AM
suckers are solid. the sealed box i had was louder than this IB one and the hatch flexed a bit. but i have not put an ounce of deadener on this car and its real quiet. so i am really happy about that. only thing that vibrated was the sun roof emergency hand crank wich is under a panel in the headrest. its a little allen key, just take it off the mounting bracket and put it in the glove box, all set :)

otherwise, the car is quite solid. great acoustics and everything. can fit some good sized mids in the doors too :)

and fyi, subs in a hatch is a great idea lol :)
