SQ=how well it sounds
SPL= how loud it it
This is the best explanation that i could find that would fit your descriptions of "layman's" terms

SQ = Sound quality there's alot of things that determine this including how a speaker reproduces the sound that it's expected to
SPL = sound pressure levels, all out bass, no real musicality just the most possible pressure and bass...
Thats just a simple def. someone will chime in with more i'm sure.
