My car is starting to not shift gears all the time, even when I mash the pedal to the floor. Is this bad news for me?

My Jeep would just stop accelerating and rev to about 5-6k rpm's then catch into gear.... Is your car doing that?

Lucas™ makes an excellent tranny additive; Realize of course that it's just a quick fix, isn't going to solve the problem.

Yea when I was getting my oil changed a month ago they added some in there for me.

I guess this is the problem of having a caravan with 190k miles on it with original parts.

Consider yourself lucky....Dodge caravan with 190k miles have usually gone through 2 transmissions so far

Well from what I was told its all og parts.

Do you know where I can find out about the tranny fluid level?
I didn't see anything when I looked today when I got home from break.

And how much do the trannys cost to replace?

I heard that the tranny and the engine should be replaced if the tranny goes, is that true?

I wouldnt waste money on tranny,,,,considering the fact that the engine could go next since your tranny just went out

:fyi:

Lots of your seem like you know nothing about what you speak of. Just cause a tranny goes doesnt mean your motor is next to go...

Dodge caravan...if you gt a oem reman or a jasper trans...figure trans and labor..2500-3200 bucks...more than the van is worth. And no just because the trans went out doesnt meant he engine is...although niether of those are known for longevity in dodge minivans

What year Caravan? Some of the models had trans controller problems, or the speed sensor on the side, you need to pull codes. Dont just assume its the trans. What engine is it also?

FineLinePimpin

yeah it could be the input and output speed sensors...part numbers 4800879 and 4800878...they are know for going bad...one is coarse thread one is fine thread....just replace both. They are like 20 bucks each...oh and those are chrysler OEM numbers

which trans a604 (4spd) or a a413 (3spd)? Does it shift at all? Is it stuck in 2nd (limp mode) ? If so may just need a TCM (this is 4spd only, the 3spd didnt have any electronics). See if you can pull codes by doing the key on/off cycle, then counting the flashes of the check engine light. Better yet would be doing it with a scanner, if you dont have one then get Auto Zone to pull the codes for ya.

Clutch maybe? My blazer I had a few years ago I had to mash the clutch in to get it in gear, right before it went out. Tranny was good though.

auto's dont have clutch's

Well the dash guages dont work so well.

So many burps = rattled grounds loose in the dashboard lol.

Like 1 out of 4 times I turn the van on, the speedometer works.
Ill check tonight and see what trans I have. Im pretty sure its a 4 speed though.

btnhfan
03-26-2007, 11:25 PM
Yea its a 4 speed.

pull your codes, may just be a sensor problem. Does your entire insturment cluster not work? or just the speedo?

btnhfan
03-28-2007, 11:06 AM
Well I guess that they work, its just that it doesnt light up ever. And the information center above doesnt work either.

jdawg
03-28-2007, 11:15 AM
Heh, they may or may not be related. Gauges not working could be a circuit board problem, or the big plug that plugs into the back of it may be fuxored. As far as the trans, yea your gonna have to take it somewhere and get them to pull codes, not sure if Auto Zone can do it or not.

btnhfan
03-28-2007, 11:24 AM
Yea well the dash lights have been out for a while now, the tranny problems only recently, so I don't think they are related. From about a year ago they would go on sometimes, then more burps in the van and they dont come on anymore.

might wanna check you trans oil also could be a solenoid gone bad? get it checked as soon as possible the more you drive it the more damage you could be inflicting on it sometimes people dont even realize they dont have any trans oil and end up making things worse by the simplest things take it to a trans place theyll give it a test drive and usually its free :santa:

i had an 88 mazda 626 and the tranny just blew about 2 weeks ago. before it was having problems going into gear. than I was backing out of a parking lot one day and I hear a BAM look under the car and all my tranny oil is on the ground. got an estimate for a tranny and it came up to 1500 which was worth more than my car.. so luckily i went shopping and 2 days later found a 97 jimmy for 4 grand :)
