Does anyone know who makes a HU with a hard drive built into the unit itself so you can load it up with MP3s or whatever?

Thanks

Clarion makes (or made - do not know if it is still an offered feature) HUs that have (or had...) something they called "MusicCatcher" that would let you rip tracks directly from the CD that was loaded onto an internal HD though I do not know in which format.

The upcoming Kenwood KDC-X991 is supposed to have 512mb of internal storage as well.

I would wager there are others but I cannot say for certain.

Does it need to be new?
Does it need to have a CD player also?

You may like the Riocar Empeg. It's pure awesomeness distilled and rebuilt into an mp3 player for your car. Can hold 2 laptop drives which are easily upgradable to a maximum of 240GB; runs a linux kernel with a web server built in so you can stream mp3s from the mp3 player directly via ethernet...to more than one person at once. Tons of mad visualizations, a 20 band fully programmable Q parametric EQ. Fully programmable time alignment and tone (bitshifting) adjustment...even has the ability to be upgraded with an optical output :) You can find a radio tuner for it too, if you actually listen to that crap. Doesn't do any crossovers and only has front and rear pre-outs, however, so it's not a one-stop-shop. It's also been discontinued for about 6 years ;) You can find em around, used, for around 300 to 400$ depending on what drive(s) are/is included.

JVC has a new unit on the market that is a 3.5 inch screen with nav and a 40 gig hard drive. That might be up your ally. Its also single din so it fits pretty much everything

I had one for a few days. I didn't like it. Being JVC I didn't expect much, and my expectations weren't even met
