I am thinking of using my 12w7 for HT use. are there any plate amps that are 3 ohm stable? I would like it to be reasonably cheap as well, under 300 (if possible). so whats out there?

I haven't seen any plate amps *rated* for 3 ohms. Try this;

Or send the sub to me :yumyum:

PatFitz9
02-22-2007, 08:35 AM
yeah, i don't really have the room to run an amp like that. but the buttkicker does sound tempting...

and the amp doesn't have to be rated at 3 ohms, just stable under 4 :)

jdawg

Is that a single 3ohm sub? I would say any plate amp rated to 4ohms should be ok, you are going to have an impedance rise because of your enclosure anyways.

PatFitz9
02-22-2007, 12:14 PM
yeah, it's a single 3 ohm (JL is lame). and I don't want to rely on impedence rise. if the amp blows, they are going to say i'm screwed because i wasn't running a proper load.

I don't know of any plate amps that would properly power the W7 anyway for under $300 :)

Get a QSC rack amp, and call it a day.

actually i just talked to PE tech, and he said that if it doesn't work for me i can just return it. they have a 1k amp for just over $300 :)

are the lower lines of the QSC amps better than the behrengers though? the price is really the only reason i would get it. this is my first venture into DIY HT set-ups, so I don't want to spend a ton of money. I just have this w7 sitting around, and I though that it would sound better than my Klipsch sub I have right now.

PatFitz9

and I just saw some prices, $600 isn't what I want to spend right now.

EP2500 rated for 2400w, expect 1200w under heavy load.

Buttkicker BKA-1000 was tested at about 1kw @ 4 ohm, but is 2 ohm rated just in case.

Exactly, hell I don't even own a behringer amp anymore...

QSC shouldnt' even be mentioned in the same sentence as behringer, except to say you sold your behringer and got QSC.

Ask around, you may find a deal, like some people have found... :uhoh: :up2somet:

Another good alternative would be something from Crest:

These are the "lighter" versions of the heavy-duty Crest Pro line - meant for smaller venues and priced accordingly.

From an electronics point of view and performance point of view, the
cheaper EP2500 will probably be almost identical in performance to the RMX2450.

Street price:

$629 for RMX. Ebay price used is about $400.
$349 for EP. Ebay {not many found there}, C-stock $199.

Feel free to spend $400 - $629 for something that can give you the
same overal performance experience as the $199 clone. The QSC
warranty is headache free. I have an RMX2450, I like it, but it's not all that.
I like my PLX much better.

Two C-stock EP2500's for $400 will beat down a single RMX2450 bought used for $400.

Seems familiar?

*Similar power ratings
*Similar heatsinks
*IGBT heatsink
*Bridge rectifier heatsink
*Six big caps
*Many small Vrail caps
*Same EMI/RFI filter cage
*Signal processing on left side of amp

Looks like they cloned a PLX, moved some modules around,
removed the *important* heatsink wind tunnel shroud
http://home.pacbell.net/lordpk/proamps/PLX3402-1.JPG
http://home.pacbell.net/lordpk/proamps/PLX3402-5.JPG

and mounted two fans on the front side.

I wouldn't buy this clone because the wind tunnel design is missing,
that plays a big role on how the PLX performs.

the EP is $350 at guitar center. i'll probably go there and check it out. for me, it just doesn't seem worth it to spend a lot of money on something that I don't know much about. i'm not sure what i'm looking for, so buying a lower line makes sense to me. in the future, i'm sure that i will get a new amp. I am already on my 4th sub and 3rd amp in 8 months for my car, so this will probably be the same way. i can never be happy with what i have.

do you think it would be a better buy to get the dayton plate amp over the EP2500? i think the 2500 gives me a little more flexibility (even though most of you don't like it).

I am making the switch from two single 12" subs to a single dual 12" or 15" sub box in my home theater soon

I'm in the market for a new HT sub amp as well, the EP2500 is probably overkill, but at $200-250 used it makes economic sense
